Description Won 3rd place in the Junior Division of an Art Fair with this painting! I should've upped the contrast, the dinos blend into the background too well, then again, I did design their feather pattern as camoflague.
Oh! The cute little baby raptors!! Their blue spots are supposed to trigger the feeding mechanism for the adults (like baby seagulls aim for their parents' red bills to eat, except reversed).
Called "Parallel to the Flock" because Deinonychuses behavior parallels that of birds.

You did such a great job on the feather patterns! It's just amazing! You're so lucky you can paint so nicely. I've tried some abstract stuff, but they didn't really come out that good...

Something real about these dinos. Not cartoons, but real dinos.

I tried to make them look as realistic as possible with watercolors. The shape is pretty darn accurate (I stood in front of and drew an actual Deinonychus skeleton many times to memorize the shape), the skull looks a little wonkey on the adult on the tree root, but that's a perspective issue.

It's interesting how much a dinosaur's or bird's face changes if you change how their eyes move. Birds of prey must swivel their heads to focus on different spots of their environment. They're stuck in one place. Mammals have directional eyes, they can swivel the eye itself to look around without turning their heads. My dinosaurs have a mix between the two eye anatomies. They can swivel the eye a bit but also have to move their head. It makes them look more emotional, even more anthropomorphic (emotionally, not physically) and a little less fierce. That also may be why they look sorta real.

Ya I noticed the eyes. It does make them look more expressive. It's the only thing that's not quite 'dinosaur' about them.

It was unfortunate. I didn't get to see people's reactions, I had other things to do so I couldn't hang about the art fair. However, one of my friends at school (who'd entered his own piece) said he'd liked it.
