Description for
Arggggg Jack. Jack why are you SO HARD TO DRAW!? You can't believe how many Jack faces I've been drawing trying to discover who he is, what his face looks like and his mannerisms. I've got several features in mind and finding the right proportions between them so he doesn't look like some white dude or an 18 year old kid is pretty tough. Not to mention I have to sit there and think of classic literature quips. Damn subtle personalities and complicated backstories making for non-simple character design.
This is probably the first page I'm happy with. Every other time I drew him, he looked too gay (it was the scarf, but he needs the scarf, it's a callback to , his creator). But just making him buff wasn't enough. And too buff and he starts looking like John. Too wiry and he'll look feminine (and then he starts encroaching on Michael's appearance). And he shouldn't look like an inbetween of Michael and John because that's just silly and lazy.

So here's some Jack with a slightly less fru-fru scarf than before. And he's got a scar from his accident years ago. And stubble.

Jack:
"Damn kids and their MTVs and Facebooks and Hulus.
OhwaitIusedthosetoo BUT STILL!"

If there's any plus side to the zombie apocalypse for Jack, it's that the major sources of entertainment now would be theater and books. And little girls probably won't dig Twilight anymore now that their vision of the undead is limb-munching corpses.

A silver lining on even the darkest cloud.

I think you did alright with making his body. (though I must say, that full body of his reminds me of a football player, off the field ;; ya know, when they wear those team jackets? ;; though that's probably because of color placement and bagginess of clothing)
I like his facial structure, as well as the personality I'm getting from him. Find it kind of funny that he would think everyone knows that he's referring to Edgar Allen Poe when he says "Poe", heh. Also like the concept of him being afraid of horses. Overall, a pretty neat guy so far. Interested to see where he'll go, development wise.

and Umbagog is a neat-o idea; maybe when I'm on break and will be making references, maybe I'll make one for a zombie [gentleman] I have and see if I can stick 'im in there.

I got a better version I'll be uploading tonight. I worked out his body finally and feel more comfortable with him now. I still think I need to get the hang of writing around him, but that'll come too, I'm certain.

Ooh, neat-o
And yeah, I'm sure that creating the character/story around him will get easier in time :U Some characters are just a bit tougher to flatten out and mold~

Nah it's more like the character has been figured out, but I've got to interpret what's in someone else's head and make it my own too.

Oh? Well that's understandable why that'd be a bit more challenging to pull out if it's like that.
Will be looking forward to seeing just what you can make of him :>

Agh, I really want to make a character for this. Damn my workload! Damn it to hell!

I love this guy's personality!

If you're talking about the wacky right side, I'm sorry to disappoint but he's not that wacky. I was trying to figure out what kind of jokes this guy would make and I wrote it too broad. He's coming off like Flynn Rider instead of a thirty-something former alcoholic with major writer's block.

A grungy english teacher with a bad streak? Sounds good to me, goofy or otherwise.

It was a generalization, I didn't feel the need to go heedlessly in depth in a comment. Believe me I am watching this develop like a hawk! 8D

The horse line and pose is definitely like Flynn. My favorite, however, is the one in the lower left hand corner. It's full of personality and definitely gives him more than just a face and name.

Yeah that wasn't really the brand of humor I was going for. I was interested in him having a slight phobia around horses. Nothing actually wacky, but he's just uncomfortable around them and much prefers the large vehicles his caravan comprises than unpredictable, dangerous animals (or that's how he sees them). I'm just so used to working with very broad personalities that Jack's is harder to pin down. I got lucky on the other two humans, and Michael is...well...his whole MO is that he's a shallow fraud.

I would offer advice, but I don't really have any tricks that would help you pin him down. All I can say in terms of encouragement is to keep trying. I know you'll get him down eventually, and if you don't do it while you're awake, you might end up doing it in a dream. I'm not sure whether it's happened to you, but when I get stuck on something art-related for an extended amount of time, sometimes I'll dream up a solution. Which is why I try to keep a sketchbook or journal by my bed; I don't want to forget the solution I woke up with.

If you start to get really frustrated with it, give yourself some time off from him. Try to draw someone else for a while, or just do little concept doodles without thinking too hard about what you're doing. You might end up surprising yourself.

Like I said, my advice isn't much to work with. I'm not the greatest artist, and I'm certainly no where near as knowledgeable as you. I don't know if any of what I said could be helpful, but if you try it out and they work... Well, good for that!

Trying to just make him more part of my brain is my best solution. He's very much 's creation with my note being "I need a badass zombie-killer guy, but not a cliche" and offered up Fist of the North Star as a deliberate "don't do this".

Yeah. I like your solution better. It's less complicated. lul

His design seems rather Disney-ish.

Yeah I was trying to nix that as best as possible. The last thing I want him to look like is Flynn Rider or Prince Naveen. The white outlined ones on the left are the ones I'm happiest with.
