Description
Slightly dazed from what he assumed was a long-range teleportation spell, Spike finds himself in the middle of Canterlot. As he makes his way through town to see if he can arrange for a trip back home, he starts to notice a few things that are out of place. Several storefronts he has never heard of are in places they shouldn't be, a few streets are altogether missing, and a lot of the ponies in town that he remembers being much older appear much, much younger. Undeterred, he continues marching towards the castle, eager to return home to Ponyville. As he makes his way through the park, he suddenly notices a very familiar face... though she's somewhat younger. His heart jumps.

"I'm in the past..."

He sees Twilight as a filly sitting on a bench, sobbing. While his better judgement and knowledge of science fiction novels tells him to not get involved with the past, his heart guides him to take a seat next to the little filly. She moves down to one end, unsure and fearful of the dragon. She continues crying, more quietly now.

"No, no... don't be scared. I'm a good dragon." He scoots on down next to her. "I saw you crying... what's wrong?"

Twilight sniffles. "Two of my upper classmates took my books and threw them in the mud... and now they're ruined forever." She motions a hoof down to the sopping wet, muddy hardcovers leaning on the leg of the bench. "This is the third time this month they've done this to me... They always wait until Shining is gone, then they come and get me." Her lips tremble.

As the tears begin to well up in her eyes again, Spike instinctively reaches over and gives her a hug. She's surprised, but accepts his embrace. "Everything's going to be okay, Twilight." Relieved, the little pony sighs. As they break away, Spike wipes a tear from her cheek.

"My name's Spike."

After a bit of a mini-hiatus, I'm finally back with some cute pones to share with you all today, courtesy of my good friend After I received the story proposal for this commission, I felt that warm little tingle in my big, black heart and just had to do this pic up. The story is also really cute! It'd be cool to see an episode where Spike might get a chance to talk to Twilight before she hatched him... or perhaps get a chance to jump into the future to talk to his adult self. Time travel in any series can really mess things up, but when it's handled right, it can be extremely effective at providing depth and insight to a character. Between all of the characters available for such an episode, Spike and Twilight would be the best to explore.

I actually had a little trouble coming up with the background for this one. I don't think there has been an official Canterlot park setting shown in the show yet, so I opted to use some of the designs I saw out in front of Canterlot Castle and some of the garden party type of scenery. Altogether, I think it looks pretty good. I especially liked the fence design. It makes sense to include a fence around a park at this high of an elevation; don't want any ponies to accidentally wander off the side.

Oh! And I also tried a little something experimental with the foreground. There's a very light, subtle kind of misty effect around the borders of the pic to give it a more 'flashback' kind of feel. I hope it's not too subtle. Beyond that, I'm quite pleased with how this one turned out. Thanks again for the awesome commission, Slayer!
