The first time I climbed up that nightmare of a hill, I was excited. My dad grew up in Whitby and always regaled me of stories from when he was a kid. Telling me about how he would come up to the abbey in the night and set up a tent and just camp under the stars. It sounded so lovely, tranquil. When I reached the top however, I was confused. There was far too much fanfare. It turned out that to continue to the Abbey, you had to pay for a ticket to use the escalators- which you were required to use because they built a wall around the Abbey. I was furious, why charge people to some and see something like this? Alas, I was but a kid and people, least of all bored employees who want nothing more than to not be there, don't tend to listen to kids.

I would have just let it go and not bothered with this little story, but the cashier lady told us that this little checkout area had always been there. With a smile that was obviously meant to be just typical customer service, but felt rather patronising. It feels childish to admit, but seeing as how I remember this in such vivid detail when it was so long ago just really nails the point home.
