Description Apologies to George Thorogood.

Shortly after this coal drag came through the yard at Atchison, a local unit grain train rolled through. Thus, the yard job switching locomotives had to make way again.

Here, UP AC6000CW #7307 leads two C44AC-Ws and a long cut of covered hoppers west onto Main #1 through CP Z331.

Meanwhile, UP SD70MAC #5149 has just switched UP C40-8W #9548 onto another siding, and holds track on yet another siding while 7307 rolls through.

I had mentioned in my previous posting that the UP transcon is double-tracked from Kansas City to Marysville in both directions, which is true for the eastbound section. The westbound is single-tracked from the yard, and runs up next to the Missouri River through Leavenworth, and then turns west here at Atchison, towards the yard at Marysville.

Finally, one of UP's elusive AC6000CW's shows its face!

I haven't seen one on the CSX in awhile.

I used to see them about once a month when I lived up in Hays. Most were on coal drags, or were relegated to regional manifest duty.

Wow, jealous! I want to hear one up close, to compare the 7HDL engine to the usual 7FDL16.

Most have been tuned-down to 4400hp like the SD90s. UP designates them C4460AC-Ws, while GE refers to them as AC44/60CWs. They don't sound too different from the standard AC44s.

Oh the smell of diesel was rampant through the air. I'll definitely hit this place up again.

It was interesting at the time, as I hadn't realized that it was part of the transcon, and after looking at some tonnage maps from 2006, I realized that the busiest line in Kansas wasn't BNSF's transcon, but UP's, as there was more freight going between Topeka and Kansas City than anywhere else in the state.
