Description Lacuna imperdonabile!

I just watched a documentary about Tex Avery. You can tell that Jessica Rabbit is a homage to his and Preston Blair's redhead. I love Avery's wolf character. It is one of the most over-the-top creations in all animation. Especially, when his eyes pop out of his head. Pure, unadulterated lust.

Thanks for making this cool image.

Look for "Tex Avery, The King of Cartoons" on YouTube.

In fact it's the reason I made the drawing.

After his dismissal from Disney, Blair was hired by MGM (which was formed in the early ' 30); here he was able to give free rein to his comic vein, without the Disney's respectability to stop him

And Tex Avery was happy to exploit the talents of a disney's animator, which justified even more exaggerated reactions of his horny wolves.

"Red HOT riding hood" was one of the most influential films in popular culture, because of the beauty of the female lead.

For me Jessica Rabbit is a declared quote of her (hidden behind the appearance of Gilda/Rita Hayworth).

the absence of Red from the movie "Who framed Roger Rabbit?" is for me an inexcusable gap.

I think the reason why Jessica Rabbit is used instead of Red is that Red isn't helpless the way Jessica is needed to be for the story to progress. Red can protect herself from any wolf. Jessica needs Bob Hoskins to "save" her. Jessica is definitely an analog of Gilda, the hyper-beautiful naughty girl type that was so popular in American films in the 40s-60s, sex bombshells.

Tex Avery was fortunate to find a man who could animate his idea of a strong and sexually provocative woman. She is never just playing "hard to get". Red is no one's patsy. She's no virgin, but she's no slut, either. Red is Red.

Jessica seems anything but a "damsell in distress", she saves Eddy Valiant shooting judge Doom, in a Toontown alley.
She has a giant trap concealed between her breasts, against any "wolf"

I think Jassica IS Red, but in disguise (for legal reasons, maybe the MGM did not give permission to use Red, or maybe Disney didn't want to use a character of Preston Blair), but the two characters are too similar, for me

Aah, I was basing it on my memories of the film from when I saw it almost 30 years ago. So you would definitely be more expert on her than I am.

Maybe they thought the design of Red was too dated for late 80s sensibilities. Though she does remind me of Hayworth and Veronica Lake, too, both stars in the 40s.

Red isn't near as tall as Jessica is either. I guess they wanted her to appear "stacked" next to Bob Hoskins.

This is from IMDb:

Jessica Rabbit was based exactly on four movie femme fatales. Writer Gary K. Wolf had based Jessica primarily on the cartoon character Red, Tex Avery 's vixen from Red Hot Riding Hood (1943). (In fact, the musical number in Red Hot Riding Hood (1943) is duplicated by Jessica at the Ink and Paint Club.) In addition, animation director Richard Williams said he based Jessica mostly on Rita Hayworth in Gilda (1946), Veronica Lake for the peek-a-boo bangs of her hair, and with the suggestion of Robert Zemeckis , "the look" trademark Lauren Bacall had.

Interesting that the writer who created the character's name was "Wolf". I guess you can blame Williams and Zemeckis for how she wound up looking and veering away from Wolf's original intentions.

i don't think I've ever spent so much time analyzing a femme fatale before.

Cheers, G

Actually Red was based on Lana Turner
