Description This one's about 15 years old, based on an idea I had when I was 16 (years earlier). It's one of my earliest oil paintings ever (I think it's the fifth one in my life). It is the second one I did purely from my brain without looking at anything. I began using it as a wallpaper for my computer desktop a few years back, and some high school students "borrowed it" and began spreading it around the internet, so you may have seen it somewhere before. In any case, my signature is barely visible in the right-hand bottom edge. I am lucky to have saved this one when so much of my other art "vanished."

Enjoy! --Faile35

His hand is open, palm toward the dragon in a warding gesture. He's a wizard of some kind, I think.

I love and adore dragons and you have done this dragon much justice. He is beautiful! I almost feel sorry for that man but I get swept up in the arrogance of the dragon too easily and find myself thinking amusedly What does he think he can do? He is against a dragon in his own lair. Dinner time. XD The swoop of the neck, the streching of the wings, the horns and scales, *purrs* I can almost see the entire sequence of him rising out of the lava. Gorgeous!

Yeah, I see the same things in it you do. The guy is dead meat, really, although I think that anyone gutsy enough (or foolhardy enough) and capable enough to enter such a lava-filled chamber, may have some kind of plan or magic to defend themselves and get out of there. Yeah. That's it. I'm sure he does... Thank you. I'm glad you like it. It was a lot of fun to paint. --Faile35

That is beautiful. I really love the color. It gives a sense of danger and heat,.... especially around the dragon's chest. The scale of the man compared to the dragon is awesome as well. The shading (or rather lighting) in this piece is great! This is a beautiful illustration. I'm glad you didn't lose this. By the way,.. how did your work "vanish"? I hope a woman wasn't involved in that process.

faile35 In reply to Dyun [2006-06-06 23:06:44 +0000 UTC]

A woman, a man, a young man, a boy, a great deal of fear, and a mistaken belief in Godly will. Those are the magicians in this vanishing act. Thank you for the compliments. My favorite color has always been black,... which isn't really a true color, so my second favorite is red, and this piece has it in abundance. --Faile35

You're very welcome. My favorite color is black as well,... but you're right. That isn't a color.

By "mistaken belief in Godly will," I'm not saying that belief in God or belief in God's will, or even that a certain belief about God's will, is mistaken. There was a mistake made based upon what some people believed was "God's will," which was in part responsible for the vanishing of the pictures. I, myself, am a God-fearing person, which is why I am going to such ridiculous extent to clarify that one phrase... Black rules!!! --Faile35

I understand. There are many "misguided souls". Many terrible actions were carried out in the name of God (or so the people believed). So what exactly happened? Did they not approve of the subjectmatter? Did they consider the works to be "evil" or "ungodly"? I don't want to pry,.. so if you'd rather not discuss it, I'll understand.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

faile35 In reply to Dyun [2006-06-07 21:34:39 +0000 UTC]

Yes, they did consider the works to be "evil" and "ungodly." Worse, I became convinced of it, too (I was the young man in question). Beauty, and art, are in the eye of the beholder. I was living under my folks' roof, and so they made the rules, determining that some of my absolutely best stuff was "inappropriate." When my younger brother made an effort to live by their rules--something that was necessary and good for him--the "crusade/inquisition" found its way into my stored art while I was away for a year (Italy, looking at the Sistine Chapel). He wanted to purge my art of some of the "questionable" material, and I didn't have the balls or the heart to tell him "no." When I came home, I was determined to fit in with the family, at the expense of the art, and so again it suffered. Only a few things survived that "iconoclasm," and I immediately regretted it.

Recently I had a sit-down talk with my folks and told them exactly what I'm painting these days, and that unless they wanted to be positive and supportive about it, I didn't want to hear anything about it from them--my ear is too open to their disapproval, you might say. They were sorry that my road has had its associated pains (it wasn't really their fault, although going against their wishes at 17 would have been much harder than at twice that age), and neither did they express a desire to see my stuff. I really love my folks, but we're a bit more distanced now than we ever have been--chalk that up as another price of the artist's life, I guess. --Faile35

Dyun In reply to faile35 [2006-06-07 22:24:43 +0000 UTC]

I'm so sorry to hear that,... yet I'm glad that despite all that happened you did not let it completely get in the way of your relationship with them. It is difficult to grow up in a home where religion has such a strong grip on the family members. I've always considered myself lucky that my parents allowed me to choose any religion I wished. Although technically my family is Catholic, we're not "practicing" Catholics. Church is within one's own heart. That's our motto. I was under the thumb of my parents (particularly my dad) until I was 19, so I know all about trying to win the approval from mom and dad. I know better now (though every now and then I catch myself trying).
You know what you're doing, and you know right from wrong. I'd like to believe that God is forgiving, and that a few paintings with gory scenes or nude women won't stand in the way of salvation (I hope I'm using that term correctly). There are more important things in life than a few "ungodly" drawings, but that's just my belief.
Artists/Creative people are always offending someone. I don't let it bother me too much anymore. There's nothing worse than repressing an artist's creative flow.

You and I are on the same page. The same paragraph, even. Your "sentence" might be about blood and guts, while mine is about naked women in bondage, but- hey! It's an interesting book to read... Thanks for sharing with me. My experience is that repressing an artist's creative flow either kills the artist's creative flow or kills the artist. "Would you rather have me dead, Mom and Dad? How about emotionally dead, feeling nothing just like a zombie?" Well, no, of course they wouldn't. Interestingly enough, I think they are accepting it as far as they ever will, while my older sister is perhaps struggling with it the worst, calling my stuff "pornography." Ah well. It's good to have a community like this one where folks like Dyun can appreciate the naked women, and Faile35 can appreciate the gore. Speaking of which, I'm submitting two more deviations right now... --Faile35

Well,.. they have their lives, and you have yours. You each must lead your own life the way you see fit. Only problem is that it might be a bit more difficult for them to do. After all, some religious folks believe it is their responsibility to "save" you. I most certainly appreciate every piece I've seen from you. I appreciate the images, the idea behind them, and the hours of patience and work that went into them.

And THAT's why I show my art here, instead of to my folks. Actually, I do show them everything I know they won't object to, and most of the time I'm right, and it helps to keep them involved in my life, which seems to be a function of the whole "family" idea. In any case, you're a gem, and I'm glad there are more like you here. Your conversations and ideas are fun, supportive, and challenging. I'm not going anywhere...

Ban you for that piece?? I don't think so. I've seen stuff here which is a lot more graphic,.... and nowhere near as cool as your drawing! I believe I've heard about people uploading photos of dead animals and body mutilation. I don't see those people getting banned.
That's the perfect way to keep your folks involved. That's what I do. I pick and choose what I show my parents. Usually it doesn't even have to be graphic,.... just something I don't think they would be too impressed with. Thank you for the compliment. I find that there are many open-minded people here (like yourself), and that is why I also enjoy DA.
