The song "Drilled a wire through my cheek" by Blue October was the thing that put the image in my head, but I think it's been waiting to happen for quite long.

Everyone around me seem to be "finding the Light", letting go of who they were and what they stood for because the world expected something else from them than what they were. Don't get me wrong, I don't think there is anything wrong with changing.
But I can't get rid of the feeling that they have...
given up.

They wear the fake-sunny masks of helpless smiles while saying "It's alright to be sad, (but don't cry when anyone can see you) and I'm sure when you grow older you won't see the word as such a bad place!"
You were the people I trusted never to touch those masks.
What happened?
Is it true you don't feel the acid on your skin, in your stomach, as you grow old? Does everyone give up on their ideas of truth sooner or later?

I know you despise me for clinging to my view of the world, but I'm just so disappointed of it all. So I take refuge in myself. Myself and I, we share this barely beating heart of hurt...

By the way, this is for you. Though I don't think you'd appreciate it.
