DONE.

DONE.

DONE.

SO MUCH THANKS TO for letting me spam her with WIP's everyday until I was done. WOOOOO. Took it all the way hahaha to a finished product, with complete background AND song lyrics in the background.

Funny thing is, I looked at the first colored piece I ever did... THERE ARE SO MANY SIMILARITIES LOLOL. [link] EVEN THE COLOR THEME IS ALMOST THE SAME.

That that aside, Cal, again. Lyrics is from Free as a Bird by the Beatles. :> HERE'S THE SHORT RANDOM STORY I WROTE TO GO WITH THIS PICTURE (BUT NOT REALLY):

“Remember my words, Calixtus. You belong to me.”
As he finished reading the latest missive from his so called benefactor, the most esteemed Lord Thanassen Eskreven, Cal scowled and threw the piece of parchment aside into the fireplace. He watched as the fragile material burned, suddenly finding himself in a much fouler mood than just mere minutes before. The normally light-hearted youth sighed and looked out of the window, not a trace of smile on his face as his troubled eyes scanned the overcast sky for his only friend in this world – his pet hawk named Echo. Even with the message consumed by the hungry flames crackling behind him, fading to nothing but a handful of ashes, its words continued to burn in his mind.
You belong to me.
There were many children at the Academy. As he had discovered on the first day, there were not many students his age. There were, however, many children of nobility, or at least children of well-off and loving families. Of course, everyone here had baggage to carry. Not that he really knew anyone well enough to know what that baggage is exactly, but everyone stalked the schools’ halls like they had secrets. “That’s just because you don’t believe in humanity, Cal. It’s a different world here…” His voice faded to a whisper as he turned away, restless and impatient as he walked into the corridor and descended the stairs. He made his way to the rose garden and frowned at the pristineness of his surroundings before quickly departing for the woods to seek some solace.
Indeed, the Academy was like a bubble. It was so different from the world he had known as a child. The streets, the sewers, the underside… he had known the guts of the city and the kinds of vermin who dwelled there well. In fact, he had been one of them, until a servant of Thanassen Eskreven picked him out and molded him into the person he is today – cunning, mistrusting, deceitful… or at least, that’s how Cal saw himself. He often wondered if he would ever be able to erase that part of himself, the Cal that stole and killed for a faceless lord who held an invisible leash on him. No, that Cal would exist as long as he belonged to someone else – it didn’t matter if it was Eskreven or someone else. They would only see him as a tool to be used.
Sometimes, even Cal himself thought of himself as a tool borne fitted for someone else’s hand.
He looked down at his calloused, scarred fingers and marveled. Eden. The word was familiar – not many in their world operated without some form or another of control over it. He had been rudimentarily familiarized with his own powers once upon a time, when he was first taken off of the streets, but anything beyond the most basic knowledge had been learned through intuition and experience. As he rubbed each of the scars, memories of his little experiments flashed through his mind. The pain was all but a distant memory; however, the images stayed with him. Each time he would accidentally burn himself, see the disintegration of the skin on his fingertips, the blisters that would form and pop… Not that anyone had forced the kid to do this to himself – his curiosity would always get the better of him.
I guess it’s a good thing I’m here now, he thought as he turned to glance back at the looming structure of the Academy, a bitter smile on his lips as he dragged a hand through his hair. Even if it’s Eskreven who ordered me here… Maybe I’ll find a way to break free.
After all, fate has a funny way of working sometimes.
