Description Comments welcome!

Well, I'm quite proud of this. It's my first portrait of an animal using a photo and it's a pretty good match. This is definitely going in my portfolio.

Information on the Subject

Name: Mount Kilimanjaro ("Hatchet")
Breed: Standardbred
Notes: Former racehorse, pacer, freeze brand on right side of the neck. Now an endurance and trail horse!

Super cute standardbred that I got to meet in person. He was more interested in grazing than in being petted, but still an awesome little guy. His owner provided the photograph for this portrait.

Your realism is incredible, Rosy, really! I love the soft but defined shading, and the minimal details.

YA! Eh? I have pictures of him on my facebook. He looks exactly like this, big, and with a domed forehead... it's incanny! LOL! I work at a NWMP museum. I use to ride in the musical ride full time, but i got a bad back injury so i have only been a backup rider for the last two years, while working in the office and stuff. the museums website is here: [link]

This most certainly should go into your portfolio. It's really beautiful!
I just love the painting style. You blended the color tones and shading in so nicely. I especially love the way you did the shadows along the neck. I love some of the warm, more reddish/maroon tones you put in to give the body some life. Highlights as well fit in quite well. Only a few stray marks or parts where it looks a bit too thickly put seem a bit off (mostly along the rump and a bit below and to the right of the withers). Very well done!

Also, its lovely to hear that a former racehorse is living a well life in retirement!

I love this portrait (even though Hatchet looks rather "meh" about the whole thing)! I like your style here

Falcolf In reply to Ala-Rai [2011-09-25 23:30:24 +0000 UTC]

Thanks I painted it straight from his owner's photo of him and he was tied to a tree in it. XD I'd be pinning my ears back if I was pinned to a tree too lol. It was my first time doing this so I didn't want to change anything, or I would have pricked his ears. I'll definitely be doing more of these paintings!

I'm not so sure if he's pinning his ears back more than pouting...or listening behind him.
But yeah... do more of these.

I definitely will once I have photoshop back. I found this one really educational, horse-colouring wise.

Very well done indeed! Hatchet looks very unimpressed with having his portrait done. Getting my horse to put her ears up for the camera took some sneakery, bribes, and effort.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Falcolf In reply to Murasaki99 [2011-09-18 08:03:22 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, I kind of wish the photo would have been him with his ears up, horses look so much happier when their ears are pricked.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Murasaki99 In reply to Falcolf [2011-09-18 20:19:41 +0000 UTC]

They are happier when their ears are up. I kind of learned to fix their ears when doing a portrait. Typically in a photo at least one ear is turned sideways or something so I just fix it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Falcolf In reply to Murasaki99 [2011-09-19 09:06:23 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, this guy didn't look too pleased, he was tied to a tree, but for the sake of my being such a noob at portrait painting, I didn't change it, though I'm sure this would be a happier picture if he had his ears up. Ears up is cuter, I don't really want to approach a horse with flattened ears.
