LONG VERSION:
Flavine is our main heroine. She's a middle-aged swamp witch. She lives near the edge of the queendom in a nice little cottage, all alone except for her pet alligator, Snack. Most people leave her alone, as she has acquired a reputation for her wisdom, power, and grouchiness.
Back in her youth, she had many adventures both romantic and otherwise.
She once got engaged, a long time ago, when she was young. But her adventurer fiance went off to find her fortune, and never returned. She was heartbroken but, years later, got married to an adorable pastry chef from a nearby town. The two were very happy for some years, but regrettably the chef passed away from a fever one winter. Flavine still visits her grave every year, and spends time with her ghost. She then got engaged to a goblin shaman who took a shine to her when Flavine saved her life during a sandworm attack while traveling abroad. But sadly, the laws of her goblin tribe prevented her from marrying an outsider.
Nowadays, she's quite content gathering herbs and brewing potions and staying away from the hubhub of civilization at large. But that can't last forever.
Beccath is an earnest young knight totally dedicated to the queen's service. She first enters Flavine's life when she's sent as a messenger to fetch Flavine to the royal castle. Flavine, unsurprisingly, doesn't want to go, and so gives Beccath an impossible task to accomplish. But the young knight finds a clever solution out-of-the-box solution and impresses the old witch, who agrees to go with her.
Lilizett is the young queen of the realm, crowned only two years ago. She's even younger than Beccath and whimsical, enthusiastic, coquettish. The populace loves her, but none so much as her favourite knight, Beccath. The queen's heart, though, belongs to only one person: Flavine.
Back hen she was first crowned, she had a new castle built for her court. The site chosen was right outside the witch's swamp, and the noise and influx of people coming and going day and night annoyed her greatly. When she'd had enough, Flavine appeared before the queen, the entire court cowering before her reputation... and kindly requested that they leave her swamp alone. She explained that it was home to dozens of important medicinal plants and rare animals, all important to the prosperity of the queendom. Lilizett was very impressed, and ordered that no one trespass on the swamp during or after the castle's construction, and that all the noise be kept to a minimum.
From then on, the queen was smitten with the attractive older witch, and frequently sent messengers with love letters, gifts, and requests. Flavine usually ignored these.
This time, after Beccath's visit, Flavine did go to an audience with the queen, though still turning down the monarch's flirting. The queen however, also explained that she needed her witch's expertise for a plan she had been concocting. With political situation having started to deteriorate across the land, and the emergence of a sinister cult, the queen thought it would help rally her people if they all fell in love. With whom? With her? With each other? Yes! Everyone in love with everyone.
Flavine declined to help.
Things might have stayed the same after that.
But everything changed when the Shadows attacked.
The Shadows are the aforementioned sinister cult. They believe in the primacy of the darker emotions: anger, sadness, despair. They use these to fuel their dark magic, and aim to conquer the queendom. One morning, they staged an attack on the castle. The knights and guards were powerless before their magic, and they managed to kidnap the queen. Beccath, shamed and panicked, knew of only one person she could turn to: Flavine.
For all her independence and aloofness, the witch knew things were bad, and agreed to stage an immediate rescue. The knight and the witch together followed the Shadows through the portal they had escaped through and found the queen chained and surrounded by only three Shadows. Flavine barely held them at bay while Beccath freed the queen, with more of the cultists closing in, when the leader of the Shadow trio fell suddenly to a blast of ice magic. Flavine looked where it had come from only to see... the queen's outstretched hand, surrounded by ice crystals, fall limp as Lilizett fainted from exhaustion. Before they could be overwhelmed, the witch, the knight and the queen fled back through the portal, which Flavine sealed shut to delay any further incursions.
With the queen worse for wear after her ordeal, and the origin of her new magical powers unknown, Flavine decided to stay at the castle for a time. The queen may need training, or maybe the Shadows did something to her, and she may need watching over for other reasons. A new normal settles over the castle by the swamp... Beccath takes charge of the queendom's troops, rallying them after the Shadows' attack.
But another thing weighs on her heart. Taking Flavine aside, the knight makes a request. Could the witch respond positively to the queen's advances? It would mean so much to her to see her liege happy. But Flavine confronts her with her own feelings: it's clear that Beccath herself is in love with the queen. Would she really throw away her own chance at happiness that way? This is when the lonesome witch comes to realize: she's falling for this cute knight doing her best.
