The old king of the Outlands perished. Little was known about the truth of his death, but barely anyone was surprised. It had to happen, sooner or later.
Old Jabari, leader of the Outlander pride and a far descendant of the barbarians known for their bloodthirsty nature, wasn`t in his best state in his last years. The king even had to rely on his lionesses to perform the duty of the protectors. He still had some power in his body left and never let any lioness fight the intruders by her own, instead he was always gathering the whole pride, and outnumbered strangers always retrieved. Even though usually lionesses would just get rid of the weak old male in favor of strong young lion, this pride respected the king no matter what, believing he gifted them the best fate that they could ever have, regarding their dark past and bad reputation. Jabari managed to fight his own dark past and fix most of what could be fixed, returning at least half of the Pridelands` trust. His pride was still technically in exile due to Jabari`s father`s crimes, but nevertheless, Jabari could expect the help from the neighboring kingdom. His pride was provided food when they were in strong need and when Outlands acted especially rough to its inhabitants. He could ask for help if his pride wasn`t able to defend themselves. He even could receive a Pridelands Royal Mjuzi`s help when he was badly injured. It seemed like the pride couldn`t wish for more, but there was always the one in each family, who wasn`t sharing everyone`s happiness.
The oldest son of Outlands king, Kiburi, was born before his family was exiled to the Outlands. At the time he was born, his father Jabari wasn`t really a true adult himself, he was still young, unexperienced and wasn`t a good father figure for a little boy. Kiburi`s grandfather, famous Selfish as everyone calls him now, on the other hand fully understood the potential the youth had. Selfish tried to manipulate not only his son, but also his grandson too, in latter he succeeded even more that he could imagine. Kiburi grew to believe his own father was always someone`s pawn, not strict and strong enough to fulfil the great destiny that their ancestors passed to them. After the tragedy almost occurred and Selfish`s plan to take Mohatu`s throne failed, the whole pride and followers of Selfish were exiled. Jabari tried his best to rebuild what his father ruined and eventually the peace was restored. But Selfish continued to live through Kiburi`s views on life. He believed that Outlands were never suitable for their family and that they must fight again and again to finally take what should belong to them, not just beg for scraps that were left after Pridelands` feast. Jabari didn`t want to hear anything like this and as soon as Kiburi started to express more protests, father forbade his oldest son to come close to any of the pride members. From that day on, Kiburi was exiled twice in his life. He always tended to wander around the pride`s den, knowing well that Jabari looks at him, but he never came close. At least while Jabari watched.
The king also had another cubs. Two beautiful princesses Zira and Kiwango and the youngest one, little boy called Giza, the precious treasure for everyone in the pride. With Giza`s birth the oldest Kiburi was gradually fading away from everyone`s mind, soon turning into a shadow that just follows you everywhere and is not a threat but a routine. Though for king`s kids, especially for Zira, this shadow was the most mysterious and intriguing thing in the whole Outlands. Her father tried to never mention Kiburi, and Zira and her siblings just barely knew that this lion is their brother. They also were told to not speak to him and don`t approach him, because he is dangerous. Of course the forbiddance was only more attracting for the young cubs and soon enough Kiburi started to have secret conversations with Zira and Kiwango, successfully poisoning their minds with his grandfather`s ideas. Kiwango soon realized that what Kiburi told wasn`t a good thing and soon only Zira left to speak with that strange lion whom everyone knew but whom everyone also didn`t know at all. The time passed, Jabari was turning old and weak, Kiburi on the other hand turned into a strong and powerful male. The time was already close, he was very patient and careful and waited for his chance. Finally, he couldn`t wait any longer. The day his patience broke was the day the old king died. The point of no return, dead kings body, being swarmed by insane amount of scavengers, lies deep below the steep cliff for nobody to see and examine. The tragedy for the whole pride, the rejoicing for the new rightful king, who rose from shadows and now stood at the bright burning sun, declaring the new era.
Zira always looked up to her older brother with fascinated and respectful sight. Just like now, standing beside him on the top of their own little Priderock which they all called home, she felt special and held her breath when Kiburi was speaking to her. She wasn`t mourning the king`s death like others did. Now, filled with both unbelief of her father`s death and the sudden thrilling expectation of changes which were about to happen, she couldn`t help but smile widely, just like Kiburi did. And Kiburi knew, seeing Zira`s eyes, that she has a new horizon to see, just as him, and that she has the right to stand on the real Priderock, just like he himself has.
