In every case I've seen where this sort of thing is done the color is left where the most focus is desired unless just the oposite is intended. In this case the focus is split between the lips and the eyes and it is a shame that they each take away from the other. If it had been me I would have left the color in those lovely eyes and desaturated the lips . This would draw attention to the thing that makes this photo and stop splitting it up between the two, making this a much better piece and allow you to achieve what you had, I believe originally intended. It is really a lovely photo.
