This is a stunning photography, Elly! Don't you love euphemisms, such as "Dissolution of the Monasteries"? To think hundreds of once-beautiful structures such as this were ruined (and thousands killed) simply because a murderous egomaniac, for whom constancy remained a mere concept, wanted to get laid.

Yes..I don't like to think of the countless works
of Art that were destroyed during these times.
Having said that ,its gone on since time immemorial
in one form or another.Personally, I have never forgiven
Alexander the Great for destroying Persepolis .

You're quite right, Elly: The mass destruction and murder committed during the so-called "Dissolution of the Monasteries" is but another in a very long list of horrors our species has inflicted upon itself. In spite of its comparative youth as a Eurocentric federal state, the U.S. has been the scene of genocide committed against the Native American Indian peoples who have been here for thousands of years.

(Official euphemisms include "Manifest Destiny" ["We are commissioned by God to do this!"] and "The Winning of the West" ["The only good Indian is a dead Indian."] -- the former being philosophically and theologically sinister whilst the latter is totally mendacious.)

Before that, there was the seemingly-endless parade of Spanish "conquerors" who set the standard for modern genocide by wiping out entire civilizations in (what's now called) Central and South America. Their example was not lost on capitalists who subsequently showed up in North America. Indicative of the ongoing justifications of such unspeakable cruelty, Columbus Day remains a national holiday here in the States.

Its hard to think that the genocide of the Native Americans
was really a relatively recent event.
Indeed... be wary of anyone who tells you that "God is on our side".
Especially creepy politicians called Tony Blair.

My U.K. friends spelled that politician's surname "Bliar" -- and I know just what they mean. I'll have to work on an alternate spelling for "Obama".... I was thrilled with Obama's election, but all he's done since is help the wealthy whilst ignoring those public promises of reform he'd previously made.

Indeed, as you implied, autocrats and oligarchs use religion or some other equally-bamboozling theoretical construct to first deceive and manipulate those whom they seek to ultimately exploit or exterminate. History repeatedly indicates the first people disembarking from their invading conveyances of choice are almost always disciples (clerical or otherwise), sent by invading power elites to evangelize a mendacious righteousness; and should such foreign theories be rejected by indigenous peoples, the invading power elites are then free to consider subsequent persecution entirely justifiable.

As with all such matters, of course, there's absolutely nothing whatsoever we can do to mitigate against the cruelty and suffering meted out by autocrats and oligarchs. This is why, via television, men watch sporting events and women watch soap operas. In doing so they are being lulled into a state of consumerism, obedience and passivity by those selfsame power elites; yet without some form of escapism, reality is unbearable.

[Note: We return you now to our regularly-scheduled programming.]

Obama is faced by a well oiled machine that is intent
on preserving the Status Quo..there are too many
vested interests at stake to allow any radical changes.
Perhaps he is doing all he can given these restrictions..
or rather,he is doing what he is being "allowed" to do.

Hmmm....I think most people in their
Youth go through a phase of "trying to change the world"..
most then settle into what you describe above...anaesthesia
through sport,TV.,shopping etc.I can't make my mind up though
if this is because they can't face reality or they just don't
care any more because they have their comforts.

My own view, Elly, is that they don't care anymore because they've come to the realization there's nothing to be done about it. Alas!

I think it is probably a combination of that and the fact that
it seems like too much "hard work" when they have their little
comforts and would rather be sat typing stuff on the internet...ooops!

Seriously though..I think the pace of life is just too fast nowadays..
I don't think humans have evolved sufficiently quickly to deal with the
stresses of modern life..by that I mean life over the past 2,000 years.

LOL! *sits down at keyboard* I think the so-called "Industrial Revolution" was nothing but a load of old cods; and the capitalists who brought it about did more to dehumanize our species than all preceding (and following) events combined. In my view, that barbaric scenario was the turning point after which nobody was safe from the deadly whimsy of capitalism.

It's the existence of this "jobs" culture, a product of the Industrial Revolution, that's stolen our species' humanity. So-called "progress" is only progress for the wealthy; and our sole purpose as lackeys of capitalism is that of automatons who dutifully report to work for shit wages and then buy the unnecessary crap we've had a hand in producing.

Tis all true.
But its mans greed at the back of it all pushing it all
onwards..not the machines or technology. If we were smart then we would have
an easier life now spending less time at work and being less stressed .But
what do we haveinstead? ..The complete opposite scenario.

People do have a choice to some extent..they don't have to play their game.
Its out of control now though like some runaway train.
6 billion people all wanting their car and their fridge and their air conditioning
and their ....etc etc. Somehow thinking that that will make them happy.
