Description This is the Kurilean aglah (Thalassocanis ostreophilus), a large descendant of the raccoon dog. This species (and its close relatives) lives near the seashores of the north Pacific (this species in particular lives in the Big Kurils and Kamchatka) where it dives into the water or investigates tide pools to hunt for any marine animals it can catch. That mainly includes molluscs, crabs, sea urchins, and some slow fish like blennies. It has a massive, bear-like body and very thick, strong jaws with persistently growing incisors to crack open tough shells. They live in small groups and shelter in holes under rocky enclaves.
