White charcoal on black paper.I used a less textured paper for this than the last charcoal portrait I did. (You can see that here: fancybirdy.deviantart.com/art/… and here:fancybirdy.deviantart.com/art/… ) I actually liked this paper a lot, at first I was worried about it, but the slightly smoother paper allowed for more detail. I'm sold on it now!
(This was extremely difficult to photograph by the way! It took me a few days to get a half decent shot!)

Oohh nice chiaroscuro! The position of the light source is really ideal to showcase the specific Dunmeri facial features. Really, really nice!
If you don't mind, what's the reference of this black paper you used? I have still to find my 'ultimate' black paper.

Here's the kind I have: www.amazon.com/Strathmore-STR-… I got it from Michael's for I think $12, somewhere around that number. You can erase off of it easily, it's pretty sturdy. Also, black charcoal doesn't stand out on it too much, it blends in nicely. Reeaaallly hard to get a picture of this paper though, as it has a very slight sheen to it. What are you looking for in the Ultimate Black Paper?

What I am looking for is pretty imprecise I guess, like a general feeling of not having too much of a hard time when I draw, so things like medium texture, paper sturdy enough to tolerate erasing and corrections but not too hard and stiff either; a balanced paper if I can say things that way.

Since it took me so dang long to reply to you (sorry!) you may have already gotten it though! Just a heads up since you mention wanting a paper that doesn't give you a hard time to draw on it, when I first drew a line on this paper it felt really weird, like the pencil was stuck or something. But, I just had to get used to it is all. I will say that charcoal sticks feel better than charcoal pencils on this paper. I think that might be true on any paper though!
