Description

Celtic Knotwork Roundel on Charcoal Adult T-shirt PL0033

We have a passion for Celtic art, so had to post a knotwork design up as soon as we'd worked out how to use DA. We'll be back soon with more of our designs using knotwork, and keypatterns and spirals too.

This is our own original embroidery design. The centre of this design is based on the topology of a knot to be found on the Ulbster Stone near Caithness on the north east coast of the Scottish Highlands. Strictly speaking it’s origins are Pictish rather than Celtic, dating from about the 7th or 8th century AD. The 5ft high rectangular standing stone has a knotwork cross engraved on each side, one of which incorporates this knot. The Ulbster Stone is currently on display at the Thurso Heritage Museum.

The knot on the Ulbster Stone has a square outer form but we have recreated it in a rounded form. Additionally we have used a Celtic ribbon style with clear space between the elements, rather than the original Pictish engraved style where there is minimal clear space.

George Bain provides a guide to constructing this knot in his fantastic book “Celtic Art - The Methods of Constructionâ€.

This Norse Celtic Knot Embroidery Grey T-shirt is available from our Etsy Shop

Feel free to download the image for personal use (eg desktop, screensaver, pinterest, facebook, tumblr, etc) as is, but no derivative works or commercial use please.
