As a small boy, he saw Captain Levi and his squad go out. He saw everybody's respect for him and knew he wanted to earn everybody's respect. So, that's when he made the promise to himself that he would join the Survey Corps and become a somebody. He informed his parents and they simply thought he was joking before they realized he was serious. His dad enjoyed that he wanted to join something for the better of humanity, but his mother was terrified. Once he went to leave for training, he became depressed from not seeing his parents. He met new people who cheered him up and he became quite strong. He didn't make it into the top 10, but he was still proud of who he had became.
