Crystal was the very first girl playable character in Pokemon Games which I think (and many other) goes down Pokemon in history. i remember when i was younger i was the only person i knew who bought Pokemon Crystal...Around this time the Pokemon faze in most kidz was fading...i still played that game like it was a religion and i was always so happy to get to play as a girl i alwayz though she looked so cool.Alright time to rant....Ive been waiting like many Pokemon fans for a remake of Gold/Silver/Crystal for years. And about a week ago they announce its offically happening. I was so happy and for a brief moment i thought Crystal would be the girl playabel char in this one right? I think there is no way they could have anyone else she is the Johto girl! Then a day (or 2 later) Serebii shows pictures of the two trainer Golg is there but right next to him is not Crystal!!!!!I freaked out i thought maybe its a prank but itz offical....They totally screwed over Crystal i mean Come'on!!!!I know you couldnt play as a girl in Gold and Silver but your gonna honestly not give her a second chance in the game cause of that. At first i wasnt that worried i thought maybe when they make the thrid game she'll be the girl but my friend pointed out that they didnt do that with FireRed/LeafGreen...So she may never geta remake or be added to another game...Not only do they replace her but they replace her with some Mario cosplay wanna be farm girl with the stupidist hat since Lucas!!!!(diamond) And what infuriates me more is her hair. SHE COPIED CRYSTAL HAIR!!!(although i must admit the style looks better) ITS STILL A DISGRACE! Also she took Crystals pants!!! I know over time i (like pearls design) i'll get use to it but i will never be happy that they made a new character for no reason. Some people on the Serebii forums pointed out that back then few girls played Pokemon so Crystal was probally meant to look more TomBoyish while in later games since more girls started playing Pokemon now the playable characters get more Femenine to the point where the girl must have a huge Bow on her head (-_-'
I was so mad at that moment i was serisly gonna play as Gold...But i calmed down so ill pick this new girl...im NOT HAPPY ABOUT THIS!!! But aside from all that am still very happy they are making aremake Gold/Silver are classics and im gonna love playing it again i cant wait till its released!^^

But I do agree with you about the design thing though. On a forum people were calling her "Maria", accusing her of stealing Mario's clothes. xD I also hated her design so much I played as Gold even though Gold has poofy pants lol.
Shame that Crys got replaced. I squeeeeed when I found out that in Crystal you'd get to play as a girl. And when I found out about the remakes I was pretty ecstatic until....I saw...HER.
BUT SERIOUSLY WHY DO YOU IDIOTS KEEP PAIRING STUPID KOTONE WITH SILVER WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY?!
Now I'm pretty neutral about her though, I mean if you don't count the hat I'm actually starting to grow on her.

I was really looking forward to old G/S/C characters. Some nice nostalgia but no they anew charatcher ruining a good theme ~.~
So far everything about Kotone is really tagged on, here appearance in anime was so boring and just there to give Dawn an egg and Brock a poke gear. Which to me says there are gunna go back into Johto.

I don't understand the hate. I enjoy both. Same concept. If its the clothing that you dislike, then you'd have to admit that's a silly reason.
Crystal = Female imitation of Gold. Not much design put into her to be honest. Her clothing even looks similar to his. If i wanted to play as Gold, then i would. Kthx.
I originally played Silver so i'm glad they're creating a heroine for the game I played. Not that barely-one-year-later-exclusive-gameboycolor-release that wasn't as well received as the original game itself.
Also, not sure where people are getting that fans are generally unhappy with Kotone. As far as my sources go, Japanese fans seem just fine with it. If anything, they're excited. It is a Gold/Silver Remake. NOT a crystal remake. Crystal was a "sequel".
Oh, and for those of you who think Crystal is suppose to be advertised as a tom boy...lol. Maybe you should watch the anime or read the manga. She's often portrayed as a strong AND feminine young girl.
There has been such an overwhelming amount of Kotone hate and the game hasn't even come out in English yet. Frankly, i find it a bit bratty.
I can guarantee you that when the game comes out people won't dislike her as much anymore 
I do admit though. Kotone's hat is a little...too much. But has pokemon ever been known to give their heroines nice headgear XD?

I totally agree with you on that. It's a real shame that Crystal got replaced ; on top of that the new girl looks so uber-cute that it's disgusting (that giant pink ribbon creeps me out). Okay, there it may be that more girls are now playing the games, but why do they have to make the female characters look THIS girly...okay maybe this upsets me so much since I like tomboyish heroines the best (which that Soul-girl is NOT).
Anyway, a hilarious piece of art you made there, it's always good to hear that I'm not the only one who doesn't like that poor substitute.

I don't hate her because she's replacing Crystal. I hate her because of her horrible and unfitting design. I'm actually playing the boy instead of the girl. I seriously don't want to be that female.
- Stupid and ridiculous hat. Goodness gracious.
- Her clothes look like she belongs in the Miltank Farm. Not a PokΓ©mon journey. Maybe a mix of Mario in there, which is, needless to say...:/.
- Speaking of her clothes, I don't know what the hell were they thinking when making it. It doesn't call off the boy's outfit like it always has been and always will be. It doesn't match Gold whatsoever, as traditional. That makes her even more offputting. What is she doing there? They should have made her another character role, because she definitely does not appear like the rest.
- Compare her to the rest of the female playable characters, yes, even Crystal, and they look more Pokemon-ish. Again, WTF?
- I personally think she's ugly. When I looked at what seemed to resemble a peanut, round face, I was just...as if she couldn't become more awful. Especially when you place her next to the other girls. She looks like a complete clown, I swear.
Honestly, if they were going to replace Kris, for no reason whatsoever that I can think of except that she wasn't in Gold and Silver (despite the fact that Crystal was just another remade version with high improvements and new additions, along Emerald and Platinum. Except you get to play a girl for the first time. In fact, I pegged Silver as the Rival. Always. Not the fucking girl), at least make it more satisfying compared to this shit.

Well that sucks. I remember being SO psyched when I got Crystal and could actually play as a girl (I asdfghjkl'd and everything.) but then I dropped it when I was like, all the way through the second league and it wouldn't save a game. I actually cried over a game that day. *feels nostalgic* I was hoping they'd embrace the first girl, as the others were seemingly original to their respective games, and there were tons of hard-core girl pokegamers that were embraced with her. But that's commercialism for you, originality loses to neutrality in order to make more $$. Sad, really. Although I'm particularily biased- Pokemon was a huge part of my childhood and still creeps up on me now-a-days (hence how I found this deviation).
I'm disappointed with the newer games and the remakes. I'd rather they make a single game that envelopes the first three games (r/b, g/s/c, and r/s) to be playable and forget about d/p all together, get the contests back to the way they were in r/s, and ditch the half-assed new pokemon that I could have come up with on a sugar high.

i have been a pokemon fan for a few years now and when i saw crystal i was like 'Yay a tomboyish girl!'
now it's all girls with skirts and boots (not to be mean to dawn i love her, she's an awesome character) instead of shorts and sneakers which, would be good when traveling! i still say that they should of just redisgned her outfit, not made a totally new girl. but if thats the case i'm still going to play because i love pokemon

She's awesome, and her hat is awesome. It looks like it came out of a Touhou game, but it's still awesome. I bet she keeps snacks and stuff under it.
I liked Crystal, but I actually prefer Soul's design more.

Unfortunately, Crystals design is simply waaaaaaaaaay outdated compared to mare recent games. That's the reason they replaced her. Not because she's not important, or historical. Trust me, the guys at Nintendo definitely thought long and hard before doing this, they knew there would be backlash.
The games have been leaning towards more feminine looking female characters since Ruby/Sapphire, ending up with Dawn in Platinum. Crystals character design not only looked older then the other girls, (more like 16) but her outfit looked very boy-ish. The games are targeting young girls as much as young boys now, so they need to make the girl character something that young girls will like to play as.
Sure they could have just given her new clothes, but her hair color and style also makes her less generic/relatable to the audience playing the games. The reason they choose muted hair colors is to make the player character relatable to more people. May's was brown, Dawns was dark blue/black, and here we have a return to brown.
Soul's design is obviously Crystal-inspired, you can see it in her hair, (Which still curls up, just not at a painful 90 degree angle) and even a little in her clothes. Yes, she's more girly, but the overalls and the paper-boy hat still retain a little of that tombyish-ness.
Seriously, Nintendo did not do this just to piss a bunch of people off. They did it because it was the smartest thing to do. Soul is a well designed character, people are just too blinded by nostalgia to see her for what she's worth.

At first I really dislike a new girl, but I think she isn't not bad and not ugly at all. I'll pick her in SoulSilver although I prefer Kris.
