I can imagine rounding a corner of a precipitous mountain pass in the Himalayas (I climb in the Himalayas almost every day

It would be a wonderful to stand in a valley which noone had visited before, as you say even a tiny glen would be exciting.
I always loved Conan Doyle's "Lost World" though of course that was on a plateau.

Your "Lost World" comment reminded me of an article I read that many years ago some "scientists" thought they'd climb one of the tall, flat, never-before-explored monuments in the Grand Canyon of Arizona where they expected to find prehistoric animals that had been left isolated on their tiny plateau by time and erosion (rather like the marsupials in Australia). So what did they find? A tossed-out box that had once held a roll of Polaroid film
