I wish Nintendo would confirm that this is Mario and Luigis father... That would explain why Baby Mario and Baby Luigi are in the same age as Baby Donkey Kong, and Cranky (who was the original Kong) is very old while Mario is pretty young.

If I'm correct, Mario was changed into a plumber because most of the levels in Super Mario Bros took place underground.

Y'know considering Mario & DK's characters were loosely inspired by Popeye & Bluto (an unattractive hero VS a hulking brute) you can kinda see a li'l bit of Popeye in Mario/Jumpman's original design.
