September 22, 2014I'm back after almost 3 months of hiatus. It's an explosion of colors because I used a volcanic eruption as background. Cheers!

Yes the lady without the background is a render. I didn't make or create anything, just edit some stocks with adjustment layers, brushes and combine them all. Anyway you reminded me to post credits to owner of the resourced used; almost forgot about that. XD Thanks!Β Β

I think you just need good sense of lighting. What I do is that I apply some logic into it; let's say if I make the lighting comes from the foreground, it will make good sense that the background will be slightly darker.Β
I think that's probably it but sometimes, I would just ignore the rules and put up some random lighting like this one. Find whatever suits you. And use lots and lots of BRUSH LAYERS! Β Cheers and happy editing!Β Β

Yeah I use soft brushes for the smooth lighting, you could play around with the opacity and layer settings, Linear dodge, Color dodge etc. There's no specific tutorial on this so the best thing for you to do is to keep experimenting with new methods.
You could download some psd coloring packs, I never tried it but I think it will be very helpful!
