Description So this was my Secret Santa Project this year, and once again it was a success!

The present was for a mandolin player, hence the shape of the bag. I'd never tried to make a bag before, much less one resembling an instrument, so I took my time searching for stock pictures and trying to work out how I wanted it to turn out. Once I decided on this I drew all the parts in paper and made a 2D model of how it would work. I did make it look a bit like a lute with the celtic knot rose, but I wanted it to be a bit more ornate than a regular mandolin, so I ended up making it look like its ancestor.

I think it took me about 12 hours to complete in total after I had the pattern drafted.

It's made completely out of felt, since the point was to not spend money on a gift, but make it out of anything you might already have (and I have a lot of fabrics). Some parts had to be hand-sewn because the bulk wouldn't fit underneath the presser foot of my sewing machine, but it was worth it.Β

Oh my gosh that's so cool! I bet the recipient loved it- I don't even play mandolin and I would love to get one for Christmas. All the details are really amazing- strings and frets and everything. Wow.

Thank you! Yeah, she obviously didn't think much of it when it was wrapped, because it was so light, but when she tore the newspaper she had the biggest shock face of the night. xD And the rest erupted in pleads for their own instruments. Real life Santa, that's me.

I did cheat a bit (in the name of accuracy!!) and took some measures out of a spare one we keep in the instruments room so that I could scale it and the frets would be in their accurate places.

Haha! That's so awesome. Newspaper is the best wrapping paper. That's not cheating, it's utilizing all available resources!

Thank you so much! I've been meaning to try to make bags for a while, so it was a really cool project.
