Description The Life Story Of A 1970 Chevy Chevelle (Part 34 of 42).  May 27th, 2002, Grand Lake Colorado:  Derrick Martin, The owner of this 1970 Chevy Chevelle SS 454, had recently completed a full picture perfect restoration of this prized muscle car.  Right now it looked just as good, if not better than it did back when it's original owner Lloyd Bower purchased it 32 years ago in the summer of '70.  With the recent 9/11 attacks, the US Park rangers department of Grand County decided that they'd put together a tributary parade float for the upcoming Grand Lake Memorial Day Parade dedicated to all those lost in the 9/11 attacks.  Having recently completed the restoration of the Chevelle, Derrick offered to drive it alongside the float in the parade followed by an interesting fundraiser using the Chevelle later that day.  As Memorial day approached closer and closer, The whole department laid out a design for the float, and how it should look.  They covered up a flat bed trailer with streamers, ribbons, flags, and displays and hitched it up to one of the department's new GMC Yukon park ranger units to haul it.  Derrick patriotically decorated his Chevelle with flags, and signs as well, to help tie it in with the group's ensemble.  On Parade day, Heads were turning left, right, and center as the Chevelle rolled by.   After the parade had ended, The Park Ranger's Office had set up their own fundraiser to help raise money for the families effected by 9/11.  They closed off the station's parking lot having nothing parked in there but Derrick's Chevelle and a few cones to establish a small track.  For a small price, people were allowed to sit in the passenger's seats and join Derrick for a joyride in the Chevelle around the lot.  It was an odd fundraiser, but turned out to be a hit among the locals as they sat in the back seat while Derrick shredded rubber, did donuts, slalomed, sped around corners, and burned out.  The Chevelle was worked hard that day, but it was all in the name of a good cause, plus Derrick knew his Chevelle inside and out.  Story to be continued... Anyway, All Fast Lane Illustration artwork by Ryan Sardachuk.  Click the link to join the official facebook page: www.facebook.com/FastLaneDesign, or visit the website at www.fastlaneillustration.com

So, I didn't notice this before. Derrick went with the old Polyglass tires instead of modern radials?

My opinion is that a 1970 Chevelle 454SS is one of the those cars that needs to be preserved to be as stock as possible. However, I would still add modern touches like front disc brakes (my friend's 1972 454SS had drums all around), a modern CD stereo w/iPod hookup hidden in glove box (factory radio left untouched), modern radial tires, and air-conditioning (if the car did not already have A/C).

Anyway, keep the great drawings/stories coming Ryan! Looking forward to seeing what becomes of the Chevelle in 2008!
