beautiful shot! It makes me think of home (The Canadian North)

There is something so serene about the sun setting in the snow.

Oh I love the Canadian North....although...I'd probably love it more if I didn't have to see it EVERY day

Handie In reply to FatalBite [2008-12-30 20:03:41 +0000 UTC]

it looks a lot like where you are! I'm not so much North anymore - no forests here for me to shoot like there was at home - well, unless you drive for a while. It's mostly prairies here.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FatalBite In reply to Handie [2008-12-30 20:15:07 +0000 UTC]

Except that we don't have mountains in Finland
Prairies must be cool subjects to shoot photos of too though!

Handie In reply to FatalBite [2008-12-30 20:33:16 +0000 UTC]

well, there aren't any mountains really around where I am either - the prairies are ok - but really, mostly it's just flat open spaces. Nice for big sky shots - but flat is flat.. LOL!

I need to get a little more explorative and start driving out and finding new places to take pics from. I just don't like highway driving in the winter - too much snow and ice.

THere is a guy from here who gets the most awesome Northern Lights pictures - but he lives out of town away from all the lights and gets up in the middle of hte night to get them!!

FatalBite In reply to Handie [2008-12-30 20:53:29 +0000 UTC]

Oh, in that case it may look similiar to our nature!

Yeah, I should find new places to shoot photos, too. I moved to Eastern Finland half a year ago and I haven't really explored much there. Not that I've had much time either. Besides, I don't have a car which makes it even more difficult.

I haven't seen Northern Lights yet this year but I'm really hoping to see and capture some photos of them! Light pollution isn't any good for night sky photos, usually! You're right about that.

I'm hoping to catch some star trails tomorrow or day after tomorrow. I'm going to celebrate this New Years Eve a little differently than usually. I'm going crosscountry skiing and I'm going to spend a night in one of those cottages in the forest that are free to use for everyone

wow - that sounds really nice! I just got a pair of snow shoes for Christmas and i"m trying to find my long johns but they are hiding from me!! I guess I"ll have to get some new ones! my hubby took me X country skiing last winter for the first time in about 15 years and I was AWFUL at it!! I fell down so many times and every hill (going up OR down) was a tragedy!! I told him thanks but no thanks. That's why I asked for snow shoes for Christmas. I think it's a little bit safer for me! LOL! yes........ I AM a klutz!!!

I don't really know very much about cameras yet - still learning what I can do with mine. I'd like to eventually get some new lenses but Ihave no idea what to get and what brands are good, etc. I also need to save up some money first

I've read about getting an adapter for the camera for long exposures (so you don't drain your battery - which seems to happen faster in the cold) but again, I'm not sure how to find one. I'll have to research that one of these days. Then I'd like to try getting some star trails some night. Maybe even some Northern Lights.

Oh - if you get a chance go and see them - they are truly amazing. THey just dance across the night sky and it makes you feel to small and the silence permeates the night. Beautiful - I haven't seen them in a long time (since we moved) but I remember being awed by them.

I've never tried snow shoes before but I've been planning to try them out this Winter!
I'm just a beginner when it comes to photography, too. I have a lot to learn.
I wish I could afford a new camera but I guess my trusty Canon 30D has to do for at least a year more!

You must be talking about a battery grip? I don't have one and I doubt I'm ever going to buy one. For me 2 spare batteries have been enough. Battery grip might be useful if it's really cold because the batteries really don't last as long in the cold.
What you need for longer exposures than 30 seconds, is a remote shutter (or what are they called in English)

I took some photos of Northern Lights last Winter but they weren't very bright and they were just green. No red or purple colors. You're right, Northern Lights are amazing!

I borrowed some of the old wood and leather ones from a friend a few years ago, but they were pretty old and cumbersome. They were that old round style - talk about hard to walk in those when you are short! I looked like a bowed legged cowboy in the snow!!

So these are the lightweight auminum frame kind. They are a lot easier to use - and much lighter to carry too.

I got a Nikon D40X this summer and I really like it. It's jut about the right amount of camera for me - still learning, and it's a nice size and weight for smaller hands. My friend has a D80 (I think) and it's quite a bit bigger and the display screen on it is smaller. It's a bit hard for me to grip it and reach the shutter button at the same time.

I should be getting a spare battery too - I have yet to find one so I guess I'll have to order that online too. I got a remote for Christmas and it's great! I can now take pics in the dark - but I still have to learn the best way to do it now!

In my manual it says "to prevent loss of power before the exposure is complete, use a fully charged battery or an optional AC adapter."

then it shows a diagram that looks like a battery with a cord on it that you can plug into an outlet. I should look it up and see how much they are..... It obviously wouldn't help me away from a plug in - but it would be neat for stuff right around the yard, etc, or if I am out I could plug it into my car.

I saw your pic with the green sky and the two people standing there - very cool shot!

FatalBite In reply to Handie [2008-12-31 11:08:18 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, the new ones must be a lot more practical.

I've never used Nikon DSLR's and I am supposed to teach my friend to use his D60 as he has just bought it a couple of weeks ago. Lets see how that goes

You definitely should get a spare battery or two if you're going to shoot photos in the cold or if you go for long hikes or even for a couple of days hiking trips.

Darn, it's a really strong wind outside. It almost looks like it could knock over some trees! And it's supposed to snow today too but I think I'm still going to that cottage and spend a peaceful New Years eve, shooting pictures

Thanks! Glad you liked the photo

Handie In reply to FatalBite [2008-12-31 17:34:33 +0000 UTC]

I'm not really a "hiking for days" kind of gal - not in to roughing it that much! but I DO plan on getting a spare battery.

Have a good time and stay safe. make sure you are prepared for bad weather - but I guess you do this all the time so you already know that.

hope you get some great pics! I look forward to seeing them!

It seems like I can't go for an overnight trip after all as I don't have any sleeping bags. My own sleeping bag is at my apartment and my dad's is at our Summer cottage.. What a disappointment.
But I'm definitely going there for a daytime trip.
Thanks anyway

Wonderful composition and details; I love the silhouette of the trees and the color of the snow; the only lack in my opinion is that the sun is a bit too invasive and bright.
Anyway, a very good work!
