Description Bella
I don't understand
How you can love that man
Over me
And Bella
He's just a boy that cried wolf
Don't let him engulf
Your sense of fire
You smell like vampire
You smell like vampire
You smell like vampire tonight.
--From the song "Vampwolf" by The Bella Cullen Project [link]

I had to do some Jacob Black (that can be taken two ways). Though I love Edward, I am definitely Team Jacob. Sexy native american werewolves are my thing.
and HOLY SHIT the fourth book is coming out Saturday. GASFHSDLFSKGNASKFGADKMGASMLGAMRGLMA
It's like fucking Harry Potter for horny teenage girls. Way to go Stephanie Meyer.

Anyways, trying to add a bit of realistic shading in with my normal style. And i also learned you're not supposed to shade every single piece of hair. Shine only comes from one source... i got that now, thank you my slow-learning brain.

For those of you who read the book, let me geek out with you.

EDIT: The awesome did some editing on it; fixed the chin, did a contrast fix, and cleaned up some smudgies. Looks much better now.... thanks semaj!

I just absolutely admire the attention to detail you put into rendering a character's hair! It's so often something that most artists just fill in with solid shading, but you add so much more depth to it with your style of approach(I myself, enjoy drawing each and every single strand of hair)! Marvelous work!

Aw, thanks so much! I'm always a stickler on hair... i usually have to draw in most of the strands or else it doens't feel right. glad you like it!!

Nice drawing although I have to admit that I hated the first book. I'm NOT a fan of Bella.

Yeah, she does get a little repetitive... and annoying. That's why we have the vampires and werewolves to distract us.

Well, in the beginning of the book, I could tolerate the vamps and werewolves, they were somewhat interesting, but the longer they seemed to stick to Bella like glue the less respect I had for them. I swear, I would hate myself if I ever had a friend like Bella, THAT'S how much she annoyed me. Halfway through Twilight, I found myself wishing someone, ANYONE, would tear her throat out, or drain her dry, I dislike Bella that much.

Wow. I think someone's JEALOUS.
Haaha, just kidding, i'm good at being a dick.
I see what you mean though... it sort of defies rationality.

Heheh Jealous? Nah!! When I started reading, I though she would become a better person as the book progressed but afterwards I just wished someone would run her over with a semi and then back up to make sure the job was done right! I know it's harsh and I'm sorry for ripping on Bella (well...not THAT much), I know you enjoyed that book, hell, my girlfriend LOVED it, but I've never read a main character that I've disliked as much!

There you are again going anal with the details on the hair! Wish i had your determination! Pretty well done but i gotta agree with pencillcious RE the chin. Its a very fixable thing with Pshop though. Juz a few nudges with the liquify tool actually.

Love your description of the book! They should put that in posters or the cover!

"Its like Harr Potter for horny teenaged girls! - Vanessa"

That would work! LOL

Well actually, a light source doesn't only have to come from one place, although it does make the whole illustration/painting process easier to render. A light source on an image will always work more effectively when the background has some sort of tone to justify it. It does work with white backdrops to an extent but the pure white background is just salad dressing playing host to the image, it's just a presentation canvas (if that makes sense). It's not realistic, merely functional to present your character.

My point is this, to truly understand how light works on surfaces maybe it's best to shine a torch on somebody's head and squint your eyes, just to grasp the idea of how it effects hair. The hair you have rendered is very nice but overly complex perhaps. You wouldn't be able to see every single hair on a persons head no matter how close you were to them.

It's a learning curve we all deal with. I too hate rendering hair, I cheat by trying to mimic the tones of the hair more than the individual hairs itself. The mind then fools the eye into believing the lies because it associates hair as a dense mass. That's where your light sourcing really helps the illusion.

The facial shadows need to be darker for a more realistic look, such as under the neck or nose. Even under the bottom lip.

However, my scrutiny aside, it is a very nice image, nicely drawn and presented. Very stylish, as I have come to expect from you. He is quite a handsome chap, is he based on someone you know? Or someone you would like to know? And what's with the Harry Potter line, I quote

It's like fucking Harry Potter for horny teenage girls.

Why would anyone want to do that to him, he's so young and innocent looking. Then again I've only watched one of those movies.

Fatalist555 In reply to Fladam [2008-07-31 04:39:20 +0000 UTC]

I see what you're saying about the hair... i usually try to do what you do and just shade it so that it looks like a few pencil lines are strands and the rest are hidden in a dense clump.
i'll definitley keep working on the shadows... this was good practise.

Oh, and i'm not basing Jacob Black on Harry Potter, I'm basing the Twilight book series on Harry Potter. Jacob is nothing like Harry Potter... Basically, in the book, The main characters bella (human) and Edward (vampire) fall in love. Edward leaves her for her own good and Jacob is there to make the broken hearted Bella happy again. He loves her and is the sun to Bella's moon (aka edward), but she doesn't return the feelings. Later he turns out to be a werewolf... I'm rambling, stop me.
He's basically cocky, free-willed, and funny while edward is the opposite. That's why i like his character more... he's more like me, except ten times hotter (in the movie version at least )

hehehe yeah... there was a time were I remember Superboy did have that hair! At first he had just the same hair as Superman (since his basically his clone), but later when it was revealed that his also a clone Lex Luthor, I saw artist kind of putting his hair closer to his head, almost making him bald!

Truthfully I like him better as a young version of Superman, not a hybrid of the two.

Fatalist555 In reply to DaPuertorican [2008-07-31 19:03:27 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, i remeber that! and he actually shaved his head when he wigged out on the titans... actually making him bald. I thought it was cool how he has both dualities, but i think he makes a better character as a young superman.

At least at the end, he acted like a Superman. Even though that last comics also was kind of "R" rated, with the sex of WonderGirl ans Sboy!

DaPuertorican In reply to Fatalist555 [2008-08-19 02:10:09 +0000 UTC]

hahah actually... there are none!

Maybe the baby is around somewhere, maybe Zeus have him, after all it's his Grandparent... now wouldn't that be something.

A baby having Greek Powers and Kryptonian powers! Not a bad character... and I think he would be the most powerful one... after all the magic weakness will be gone!

But really I don't know her age, I think she's suppose to be 17 at least or 18, but... you know comics character seems to not age or be one age in a issue and at another be even younger!

pencillicious [2008-07-30 21:00:34 +0000 UTC]

Beautifully rendered! Again, you've got wonderfully strong clean lines, and your shading is lovely. Great work on the hair too...even if it is uber shiney...it's your work... make it shine if you want!

My only critical comment would be that, in my opinion only, the chin more square and hard on one corner than on the other. This could just be due to the 3/4 angle, which is always a pickler to achieve. But that's just the TEENSIEST nitpick, and really not a nitpick...just my teachers brain (I used to teach directed drawing) in action.

Overall...this is a wonderful piece! I can't wait to see more of your work. You're really very, very talented. Keep it up!

thanks so much for the comment!
