Description 'Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door' fanart of one of the boss monsters

Captain Cortez-a ghost pirate guarding his vast horde of treasure in his own sunken ship with all his ghost henchman
"OooooOOOooooOOOO....
Who am I kidding? I am a fierce and terrible pirate...
Pirates don't go 'Oooo'.. You! Amigo! What do you want?"

He's not actually a bad guy at all-and give's Mario the one jewel from his vast horde Mario wants, because 'he never liked it anyway'
After you fight him he decides he likes you and acts as your ferryman to an island-as one of your party says "Awww-he's just a big softie! I love this guy!"

To be perfectly honest, I thought without a background this would be too bare to submit, but I couldn't think of anything that I thought would work, so here it is-maybe a background will be added later, maybe I'll move it to scraps

Pencil and inks in my A3 sketchbook as per usual

Any and all comments greatly appreciated, thanks

Hey, I actually REMEMBER this boss! (I always watched my brother play games... this was one of them ) I came in DURING the battle and left after it killed my bro, though, so I can't throw in any nostalgic words here.

First of all, fantastic job on the bones. They really do look accurate to the original character! And I LOVE the pose-- he looks ready to move-- and I love how his eyes really catch you. He really does grab the viewer, which is, of course, what everyone wants for their picture to do :3

A fine job indeed-- keep that art coming

Cortez was a FUN boss most of the paper mario ones were hehehe amusing game

Thank you-bones are hard O_o;;
The pose for this came out a little too close to the official art it turns out, but I tried to make him a little more active with all his weapons
I tried to make the eyes the biggest area of change from the original design of him-make him more mine as such-happy they stood out strong

Thanks for the excellent comment, as per usual

oh gosh, love the picture! I played Paper Mario on the N64--fun little game.
I like the various bones and phalanges and such, those are cool. And you can never go wrong with a skeleton or a pirate, or a skeleton pirate for that matter.

oh yes, and I just now noticed the new icon. Very nice. xD

The Gamecube sequel is REALLY good-I havn't played the N64 version, but a friend of mine is going to lend it to me sometime
Skeletons are tricky-this guy was easier because the bone structure is quite simple and more detail can be acquired through subtle variations

Everyone loves pirates Thanks for the comment
And thanks-Belle made the new icon

Nice! I loved this game so much... but had to trade it in, cuz, y'know, I'm poor. ^_^ I like the pic, though! The onle crit I can think of is maybe his head's a little small? (I remember it being giant in the game ^_^ )...

It's a very very fun game I had to draw some fanart of it hehe
You're probably right on the bigger head-I thought it was a little smaller when he wasn't just the head floating around lol he was a funny character though

Thanks for comment

Paper Mario for gamecube is a fun RPG with a very very witty script-worth a try if you see second hand

Thanks very much
