Paper Mario for N64 started development as a sequel to Super Mario RPG. Due to complications with Square, the name was changed since Square owned the license to Super Mario RPG. It eventually became Mario Story, localized as Paper Mario. The first two games were straight RPGs, Super Paper Mario was an RPG/platformer hybrid (with very prominent RPG elements) and the series then abandoned any RPG ambitions entirely starting with Sticker Star. So whenever anybody goes "Paper Mario isn't supposed to be an RPG," well this says otherwise.
