Posting this in honor of Mario's 38th anniversary.

Back in the first game, when you collect a Super Mushroom, Mario would become stronger to break bricks. In its Japanese sequel, The Lost Levels, there was an opposite mushroom called the Poison Mushroom that acted like a Goomba.

Ever since Super Mario Bros. 3, a lot more powerups have been introduced, each one giving Mario an advantage with clearing levels.
