Day 16
Today was a harrowing day for the team. I'm honestly not sure where to start. Grawl has had a difficult time fighting lately. A trainer's skitty attracted him during the fight, and the little mushroom just fell completely head over foot-stubs for her. She just kept slapping him and pounding on his head but he was undeterred. I tried to switch him out but he refused to return to his ball. I had to continually get between them to give him potions so he would survive and not inadvertently kill himself! He eventually decided to play-fight with his crush, which worked out well because he sometimes doesn't know his own strength.
And he encountered trouble again against a meditite, a blue baby-like fighting pokemon. This little guy wielded a powerful force palm technique, but stun spore and leech seed eventually gave Grawl the edge he needed. But he was constantly using mega drain and potions just to stay alive.
I was worried about Grawl's future prospects on this team because of those battles, but he turned his fortunes around when we fought May in the middle of Route 110. Mickey had no problem extinguishing her slugma, a hideous slug made purely of lava. When she sent out a wailmer, a pokemon to which I truly can't think of a comparable, familiar counterpart I know, Grawl was eager to redeem himself. I was hesitant, but ultimately decided to believe in him and gave him the opportunity. He did very well, so I think until he evolves he will only fight against types he has advantage over.
And type advantage was why I put Capaldi against her grovyle, which reminded me of a charmeleon with leaves for a horn and tail. I had Capaldi focus his energy so we could critical grovyle, as he seemed slightly stronger. And he was; the quick attack sent Capaldi tumbling through the grass. He was bearing down on Capaldi when I shoved the gecko off to grab my pokemon. May respectfully ordered her grovyle to back down and asked if Capaldi was ok. That damn bird kept trying to get out of my arms and get after grovyle though. I tried to return him but an errant wing smacked the ball away. I could see it in his face; Capaldi truly felt he could win this.
I caved and sent him into the air. Grovyle tried to quick attack again but I ordered Capaldi to use aerial ace, careening through the air and just dodging grovyle, only to whip around and slam his wings right into grovyle's face. It was an instant knock-out, but May assured me her pokemon would revive soon. I was so relieved for both of them. And Capaldi was so proud of himself!
And the last surprise of the day came just before Mauville city, when Moof was fighting a meditite. It paralyzed Moof with force palm, grounding him. I urged Moof to retaliate, even a little, but he could barely flap his wings to make a gust. Meditite attacked him again, and I don't know how it happened, but Moof broke free of his paralysis. As if by sheer will, and desire to win, he forced himself to move again. I'd never seen anything like it, and I've never felt so proud.
I'm curious to discover the reason for this, or if it will happen again in the future. I feel today's events may be a sign of the power a bond between trainer and pokemon can possess. Only the future will tell.
