Hunters have that effect on you
I'm in love with mine, she's one of three that I focus on leveling, and by far feels the most badass (next to my druid).
She's great RP-wise and I've never had more fun in a Battle-ground than with my Hunter and my Spider/Silithid pet
What's your favourite pet?

Ditto! I've seen a couple spirit beasts, but on my alts and I wasn't high enough a level to tame them
I love different beasts for different reasons. I have arachnophobia IRL but one of my favourite pets in-game is a spider, the web trap is a total life-saver in PvP
Closest thing I have to a "Spirit" beast is Pogeyan 
(Addons help too lol, but I'm not a fan of those)

Olm the Wise is a nice substitute for the time being until you can get your hands on that one
It's still a rare spawn, but It won't have nearly as many hunters after it as Ban'thalos.
I know what you mean about the appeal of the tigers. I like my black saber 
Naming them's just as fun!!
