Oh my, j'ai écrit un max de truc sur Tumblr ; je vais juste le copier-coller là~ xD (désolée les francophones~ xp)
~~~~~~
Oh my, I wrote so much things on Tumblr ; I'll just copy-paste it there~ xD
“In English, you say Rollercoaster
In French, you say Montagnes Russes (Russian mountains)
And in Russian, you say Американские горки (American mountains)”
Yeah, languages interest me ... especially when it comes to things that aren’t called the same around the world and I swear there are a lot of them. xD
So I tried to look for the rollercoaster’s history and according to Wikipedia (hmyeah), “The oldest roller coasters are believed to have originated from the so-called "Russian Mountains ", which were specially constructed hills of ice, located especially around Saint Petersburg. [...]. Some historians say the first roller coaster was built under the orders of Russia's Catherine the Great in the Gardens of Oranienbaum in Saint Petersburg in the year 1784. Other historians believe that the first modern roller coaster was built by the French. [...].”
I’d have really liked trying to explain all of these with my own words but as English isn’t my first language, it seemed a bit difficult for me, sorry. xp I also obviously cut some things but I suggest you to read them on Wikipedia or other sites if ... it interests you ... xD
I’ve also found out that “rollercoaster” was “montagne russe” in Italian (yup, just like in French, except it’s in the singular form in Italian), "Achterbahn" in German (which (according to Wiki again) means something like “Train in eight” (pfyuu, this smells like a shitty French-to-English translation xDD)), and in Scandinavian languages, it is called by "mountain-and-valley railway", but in general, people around the world like saying “rollercoaster”. c:
An explanation to why it is called “American mountains” in Russia : ” The term American Mountains is used in Russia since the roller coaster as it usually looks now was first constructed and built in the USA and got very popular there. “ (source (well, the real source would be the Russian Wikipedia but yeah xp) and why it is called “rollercoaster” (from Wikipedia xp) : “There are several explanations of the name roller coaster. It is said to have originated from an early American design where slides or ramps were fitted with rollers over which a sled would coast. This design was abandoned in favor of fitting the wheels to the sled or other vehicles, but the name endured. Another explanation is that it originated from a ride located in a roller skating rink in Haverhill, Massachusetts in 1887. A toboggan-like sled was raised to the top of a track which consisted of hundreds of rollers. This Roller Toboggan then took off down gently rolling hills to the floor. The inventors of this ride, Stephen E. Jackman and Byron B. Floyd, claim that they were the first to use the term "roller coaster".”
Sorry for the long post but at least, I hope you’ll have learnt more things with my post~! xD
