My dog passed away today (7/27/07). She was at least 14 (being a mutt, we never knew her proper age) and had been with me through the toughest part of my life- all of my pre-teen and teen years. She thus earned the title of 'nakama' because she was more than a friend or companion.Related content

I know it's kinda late for this, but you have my condolences as well. I've lost a cat myself, though I still have a dog ([link] ).
Looking at this, I got to thinking how I'd have to part with him one day, and I just felt sadness well up inside. I hope your dog passed away peacefully.

And thankfully, yes, she passed peacefully. After she passed, I said one final thing to her, "Well done, good and faithful servant." She earned this high praise.
While it is sad to lose such beloved family members, you can take comfort in knowing that their spirits still watch over you and aren't alone. (My mom was there to greet my nakama, I'm sure.)
