As her biodata stated, Mai's closest friend during her junior high school period was just Ayaka . She was so close with her even her mother, Mrs. Higashino recognizes Mai as Ayaka's "big sister." Mrs. Higashino told her daughter that Mai is the only person who appreciate Ayaka's albinism. Over the years before graduation, Mai was often being picked up by Mrs. Higashino to join her family trip as if Mai is officially their family member. Mrs. Higashino felt that only Mai that understands her daughter and she cares so much about Ayaka hence why she treats Mai as her official family member as Ayaka's older sister despite Mai is months younger than Ayaka calling Mai a "gentle giant."

One of most memorable photographs taken by Mrs. Higashino is this photo taken from their study tour to take a historical Fairy shrine from the far east region of Terra. As Manaka couldn't afford enough money for Mai, Mrs. Higashino paid Mai so that "Ayaka could have her best friend there." Mrs. Higashino said to Mai that if Ayaka doesn't have rare albinism, she would look like Mrs. Higashino with dark hair and green eyes but having a unique daughter doesn't make her being disappointed.
This photograph is also shared and saved in Manaka's phone. She framed the printed photograph to Mai's room despite Mai is now living in her apartment boarding room. Manaka said to herself If only she could know Mrs. Higashino more, she could also befriends with her but due to her lack of social skills just like her daughter, a socially awkward person, she's too nervous on meeting Mrs. Higashino.

Both Mrs. Higashino and Ayaka told Kuwase family to be more socially open and especially for Mai, Ayaka asks Mai to find more friends other than her because she would not stay with Mai forever. If this family haven't met Kuwase family, it's unknown about how Mai's fate would be as her motive to gain social status was originally requested by her sweet friend's advice.
