Awesome dreads, what method did you use?

I backcombed them. They actually were really lose, enough that I had to eventually take them out. I recommend the twist and rip method because the dreads turn out really small and tight from the beginning.

is that the one where yu just shampoo it, seprate it and wax it?
is that the method yu switched to after backcombing flopped? x

This is so cool!
I would give anything to be able to dread my hair.
But my Mother is all nit-picky about them and is WAY to focused on stereotypes.
Anyway, they look great! I'm jelly.

Exactly my parents, lol!
They only see the problems, and constantly keep telling me that when I want to get rid of them I have to shave my whole head, etc. etc.
But I really badly want them. When my hair is longer (now it's too short) I'm going to do it anyway
'cause dreadlocks are the most BADASS hairstyle. Like EVER!

Oh, yeah! I hate that. :c
I literally had to go to each of my parents and friends, one by one and give them all the same speech and show them all the same picture of clean, managed and attractive looking dreads.
One by one I got them to agree. :3
It took a long time though. ;-; ...nearly a year of fighting. D:
And my Momma is still sketchy on if she'd going to let me get them or not.. :I
But, yeah! I'm doing the same! :'D
I figure that by June my hair should be long enough to start dreading! C:

Yea, it's so horrible. Just because there are so many stereotypes attached to dreads (they're smelly, dirty, ugly, for weed smoking hippies, etc. etc.) but I have wanted them a LONG time, and now I am beginning to reach the age where I can say "YES I want them. So piss off." Well, not like that, but you know what I mean
I'm not yet sure about my friends, I think some of them will be like "wow!" And some others will disgust me for it... I think the odds will be fifty fifty (I have four (good!) friends)
I want to start dreading by June too! Because then I have a long holiday, so I can take all the time I need to dread my hair nicely, no rushing, etc. (and my hair will be the right length!)

MermaidsVein In reply to Asrath [2012-04-01 02:45:10 +0000 UTC]

OH, HA HA HA. The sterotypes. :I
I've heard so many, it's ridiculous. I just got to the point where I'm like, "if you're going to stop being my friend over this, thank you for showing me what kind of friend you really are, bitch. You can't control me. Not even my MOM can control me."
^ Just like that.
I does whut I wantz. :3
..it's all about picking the right moment though... D:
Tis the hard part. But yes! June seems like a perfect time for the both of us then! :'D And yup. The only sucky thing, is that I'll be working. And you know you can't shower for the first 1 or 2 weeks you start dreading. /:
...that's gonna be gross. ;-;
Or I can just get a shower cap... >.>; ..hmmm.. ._.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Asrath In reply to MermaidsVein [2012-04-01 06:23:04 +0000 UTC]

Really, you can't shower the first weeks?
I wasn't sure if I could, on DreadHead HQ they say: "In the first three weeks your dreadlocks be will very delicate and you'll want to wash them either every 3 days or every 4 days." So, are they wrong or not? (since I do not want to have my dreads ruined, buy also not smell like sh*t for the first couple of weeks. Doesn't dirty hair even SLOW the dreading process? (since it makes the hair fatty and yuck and it won't stick together any more?))
Well, I got a lot to learn, lol! The thing is that many different resources say different things. Some say use wax, some say don't, others say you should wash, others don't, etc. >_> it's kinda confusing sometimes.
But it's just hair anyway, when it goes wrong I can always -in an emergency- shave it off. I mean... it's just hair! It's not like a tattoo or something

MermaidsVein In reply to Asrath [2012-04-02 03:58:21 +0000 UTC]

True, and I have wigs! :3
But.. hm.. I was told by a lot of people that said you can't wash them.. o.o hmm...
But, I trust DreadHead, so I think I'll just believe them.. :I
I KNOW that I'm using wax though.
And oh, I might be wrong about the washing though, I'm looking at the HQ now, don't believe me. I'ma blonde. D:

Asrath In reply to MermaidsVein [2012-04-02 11:48:49 +0000 UTC]

wigs! Yea handy... I might buy one when I want to get rid of my dreads QUICK! I first got to get them tough... (I haven't even told anyone yet... >_> arr I'm a bit scared they will all dislike it D

Yea, I think they're a very good resource too! Everything I know about dreads is mostly from DreadHead... lol! And I think I will too, since they say that when used correctly it can help mature the dreads faster... and that's what I want, right!

Ahhh, I want to get started so very much...! But I also still got to tell my parents, my friends, ughhh! Why aren't dreads a completely "accepted" hairstyle? I mean, they are badass!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MermaidsVein In reply to Asrath [2012-04-04 21:25:54 +0000 UTC]

I spent 3 periods of my day, reading DreadHead today. xD
And I believe them about the washing. c:
I went through forums, and they all said to wash. o:
The lady who wants to do my dreads, said I shouldn't watch them.
So.. I'm trying to find someone else to do them now. o.o
I worry about her not knowing what she's doing..
..but I KNOW. It's awful. Like I said, it took a long time to get even just a FEW friends on board with my dreads. /:
But on DreadHead there are AMAZING letters/notes to employers and parents about getting dreads. :3
They're pretty good, and informative!... and convincing. ;D

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Asrath In reply to MermaidsVein [2012-04-05 07:02:14 +0000 UTC]

Yea, they are...! There are however people saying their items are crap (such as Lock Peppa is actually almost an ear medicine for dogs, but according to what I've heard... it works!), some say they are fantastic. Confusingness...! D:

I'm going to make them myself I think. Buy some sturdy iron combs for backcombing, and convince people to help me do it...!
And don't worry, even "badly done" dreads will mature... since hair even dreads without any products or anything, it's simply the state all hair "wants" to be in (well, why not let the hair do what it wants?? And what I want.)

And they're very informative indeed, I learned lots from their site about dreadlocks!
Oh for shampoo's by the way, I recommend you using "Sqeaky Green", a Lush solid shampoo. According to people I know who have dreads themselves is it the best thing they have ever used on their hair. (and cheaper than the DreadHead shampoo if I remember correctly!)

MermaidsVein In reply to Asrath [2012-04-07 22:46:22 +0000 UTC]

Ohey! Sorry for my late reply. :c
I've been rather sick these past few days, so sleeping and spacing out have been all what I've been doing.
I've stared at this comment so many times, but just.. couldn't.. reply. Dx

And I'm afraid of doing it myself, because I'm lazy. My arms will hurt, and I want them to look good from all angles, which includes the back. Something that I will noooooooott be able to do. So, I'm still trying to figure it out. The chick that wants to do'em wants to charge me $100.00 an hour, and last time she did dreads, she said it took 8 hours. ._.
Dreads are worth it, but I'm trying to find the cheaper alternative first.

Sqeaky Green. o.o Hmm..
I'll see if they sell that where I live! :'D
They sell DreadHead in the stores here, but I've never heard of Sqeaky Green. o:

Asrath In reply to MermaidsVein [2012-04-08 07:18:29 +0000 UTC]

No prob. I forget messages all the time, and most of the time I'm NOT sick, so...
I hope you're feeling better now!

Well, actually I want my friends to do it for me (they are that kind(or crazy!) actually) and then I might do a dread or three at the front, while they are doing the back. Just get some movies, good music, enough food, and have fun!
And $100 an HOUR is very expensive! If you want to, you can do it... but I myself am not really looking forward to sitting in a hairdressers chair for 8 hours... even if it'd only cost $1 per hour.

You should check if there's a Lush store near you! ([link] )
Not only the Squeaky green, but just their solid shampoo's are great, but squeaky green had the best response from everybody.

Oh good, I'm not the only one then. C:
And d'awh, thanks. I'm actually.. doing.. worse.
So, yeah. I'm sorry for the late reply, again. D:
And ohyeah, I love DreadHeads advice.
To make sure you have movies, food, music and fun people!
..it'd be so boring otherwise. :c
And I'm so looking forward to dreading my hair, it's not even funny anymore! x3
AND OMG. LUSH. I JUST TOTALLY REMEMBERED...
I HAVE LUSH PRODUCTS ALREADY. :'D

Asrath In reply to MermaidsVein [2012-04-14 13:06:03 +0000 UTC]

^^ Nope, luckily not!
I hope you'll get better soon. I feel really, really, tired now, but that's just because we had to visit a play that took ELEVEN HOURS! O: (what are schools doing to us nowadays?)

Yea, I got three friends who have enough time to help, and a father with an immense movie and music collection. Wonderful! ^^ If things go as I want to, I'm going to dread the 28th of April. Can't wait!
I should also get myself a hat or a bun or something for the days that think "Oh, fuck!" so I can hide my hair (also it's said that a wool hat speeds up the maturing process, etc. because it makes everybody's hair knotty as hell!)

YEAH! Lush is great :3
Because the Lush store in our city is closed for a couple of months I'm trying to go the baking soda way, tough my hair is not liking it so far... they say you need a transition period of some weeks, so for now I'll stick with it. Till the Lush store opens I think...

I have mine for about 1 month and 1 week already

Thats cool! How your dreads look compared to others depends on a lot of different factors like what method you used, what type of comb you used, how big the sections are, blah blah blah. Im sure theyll turn out great ^_^
