Description Here is yet another character that you all voted for during my second round of voting for the DC Comics characters you all wanted to see me redesign next. Maxima is a character introduced in 1989, who was initially a pseudo-antagonist for Superman before briefly becoming a member of the Justice League during the early '90s. Since Jose-Ramiro , Leumasy , DanFalcon and K-Jounin voted for her, this piece is for them.

Maxima is the princess of the warrior planet Almarac. Born with the gifts of enhanced strength and speed, invulnerability, telekinesis, flight, force field creation, telepathy, empathy and eyebeams, she's a veritable powerhouse. Her royal upbringing has made her quite arrogant and aristocratic, while her abilities have made her cocky and aggressive. Despite her brash persona, she is also deeply troubled by the state of her world. Almarac is a planet deeply steeped in religion and mysticism, thus dictating that all relationships must be between man and woman for the sake of breeding. Angered by the lack of love and acceptance on Almarac, Maxima has fled her home in search of another planet where she will be free to love other females without imprisonment or death. She settled on Earth, where she has discovered that there are nations that accept such unions. Initially settling down in Canada, Maxima and the hero known as Booster Gold formed an early alliance as crime fighters in the country. As they became more renowned, the pair were enrolled in the international division of the Justice League.

Despite being lightyears away from her home, Maxima still acts every bit of the spoiled princess. She is impulsive and prone to throwing fits when she doesn't get her way. Her high maintenance and haughty attitude tries the patience of her teammates. Both Captain Atom and Vixen find Maxima rather exhausting, while Blue Beetle finds her to be a total riot. The team's other resident royal, Ice, is the polar opposite of Maxima (pun intended). Where Maxima is loud and impatient, Ice is demure and accommodating. Maxima butts heads frequently with Fire, as they share similar dispositions. Despite these tensions, Maxima remains closest to Booster Gold. Their glory-seeking ways and love of the spotlight make them the perfect pair. Though not on the team, Maxima admittedly has a crush on the Justice Society member Power Girl. She believes her to be the most beautiful woman on Earth, the irony there being that Power Girl is an alien from a distant planet just like her.

For her design, I drew most of my inspiration from Barbarella. It seemed like a really great fit for Maxima and I liked the idea of giving her this layered armour look. Though she's most well-known for wearing green and yellow, I opted for the lesser known purple and gold colour scheme that she wore in Justice League America. Fire was already in green, so I figured I'd add some colour scheme diversity with Maxima.

As always, I love hearing from you guys so please feel free to leave a comment below letting me know what you think of the design and of Maxima below. You can also browse my gallery for more redesigns.

Enjoy!

digging the retro sci-fi look, i also really like the hair very sultry. Making her a lesbian is an interesting departure from the original canon.

Thanks, glad you like the piece!

I was really jazzed when I read about Maxima being gay in the New 52, as well as her attraction towards Supergirl. It laid down some great groundwork for me to rework her origins and supplant Supergirl with Power Girl as her object of affection.

She looks great! I totally recognize her!
The armor reminds me of her original design, while the colors are from her second design.

I didn't know about the crush for Powergirl, but I can see why. I kind of liked her brief connection with Captain Atom, a very powerful hero in his own right.

I really liked Maxima, especially in the JL, so it's nice to see new art of her.
Well done!

Thanks! That's definitely what I was aiming for with the design!

According to the two official canons, Maxima never had a crush on Power Girl. This piece, along with all the other DC Comics redesigns, are part of my head canon project wherein I redesign not only their looks but also their histories. Maxima's backstory borrows from the New 52, but has new elements added in as well. Rather than liking Supergirl, she likes Power Girl (who is closer in age to Maxima).

Ah, I see! Very cool, I like your version and your thoughts for her! And now I'm curious about the New 52 version.

I've yet to read those particular issues. While the later half of the series kind of drags, the first half of the New 52 Supergirl is amazing.

Hm good to know, perhaps time to pick up a trade! I did like the drawings and have sampled a couple of issues, but there were too many books that interested me and I didn't follow through.

I was lucky in that my library has all the New 52 Supergirl trades.

I'm not that familiar with Maxima, but this is still pretty cool artwork. ^_^

This is yet another character I'm not familiar with, but I'm kind of interested in knowing more about her now. I like her running, or more accurately, flying away from home just so she can date who she wants to date. It makes her really relatable since her planet obviously is similar to countries with those same standards. I love the way you describe her interactions with her teammates. She sounds like she'd be the bane of by-the-book Captain Atom's existence.

I'm really diggin' her look. She sorta reminds me of Starfire, what with the purple and the red hair, and on top of that they both happen to be humanoid aliens, but she still looks unique. I think her gold parts especially look pretty kickass. And the different shades of purple all go really well with each other. I even like the short cape, which is saying a lot because I usually don't.

Thanks for the comment! As always, it's really appreciated!

I'm definitely grateful towards the re-introduction of Maxima into the pages of Supergirl, wherein she was given a new origin where she fled her home planet due to their laws against gay relationships. That was just the inspiration I needed to rework her accordingly.

Also, I'm glad you like the look itself! I certainly struggled with the colour scheme… it almost ended up being purple, gold and green. I didn't actually even think that she'd be vaguely similar to Starfire. In the early stages, I was actually partly using Marvel's Medusa as an inspiration for the design.

I can totally see the Medusa inspiration now that you pointed it out. I think purple and green would've made her look kinda villainish. It seems to be a popular color scheme with comic baddies, namely Joker, Lex Luthor, Green Goblin, Riddler, Kang the Conquerer, Annihulis, Mysterio, Killer Moth, etc.

Oh wow! I'd never even put two-and-two together on that. Why do supervillains love green and purple so much?

TristanDavis In reply to Femmes-Fatales [2015-07-28 01:39:22 +0000 UTC]

What's even wierder is that red and black are usually the go-to villain colors, and yet they tend to be worn by heroes like Batwoman, Robin, Ant-Man, and Nightcrawler, or anti-heroes like Red Hood and Deadpool. Harley Quinn is the most obvious exception, and even then she isn't really straight-up evil.

True! You know, in Elizabethan theatre they used colour to signify what characters actors were playing. For instance, villains sore black (duh) and royals wore purple.

Again, you did a wonderful job with Maxima here. It's kinda ironic that she's a strong, independent woman, used to rule over others, yet her main motivation is to get herself a spouse.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Femmes-Fatales In reply to Jose-Ramiro [2015-07-26 18:17:19 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Obviously that's not her main motivation in my head canon, as detailed in the write-up. It's certainly a silly backstory, so it needed to be changed and modified. Thankfully the New 52 provided some good inspiration for that.
