Description By the mid-1980s, the original X-Men hadn't been on a team together in nearly twenty years. Since the "All-New, All-Different" era began in 1975, all of them had left (or died, in Jean's case) to pursue other avenues. Angel, Iceman and Beast had left the X-Men to take part in other superhero teams. Angel and Iceman both joined the Champions, while Beast was recruited into the Avengers. Shortly after, all three were part of the Defenders. Meanwhile, Cyclops had left the X-Men and started a family. At this point, it was decided that the remaining members of the original roster should re-form as a new team alongside the mutant songstress Dazzler. However, after a suggestion made by Kurt Busiek, Dazzler was ousted (and ended up on the X-Men) in favour of resurrecting Jean Grey. And so, X-Factor was born.

Debuting in 1986, X-Factor saw the return of the original X-Men under the creative team of Bob Layton and Jackson Guice. They were later replaced by Louise and Walter Simonson. Having been revived from a cocoon deep beneath Jamaica Bay, Jean Grey discovered that the X-Men were now led by their old foe Magneto and that mutants were in more danger than ever. She contacted her old teammates - Scott, Bobby, Hank and Warren - and convinced them to join her in becoming a superhero team again. Their mission was to seek out troubled mutants and teach them how to use their abilities. To do this, they pretended to be mutant hunters. These early stories saw the introduction of several new mutants, including Rusty, Skids, Rictor and Boom Boom. Writer Louise Simonson focused heavily on the personal lives of her characters, particularly exploring the complicated mess that had become of Cyclops' marriage to Madelyne Pryor now that Jean Grey was alive and well. Iceman and Beast also began new relationships, the former with Opal Tanaka and the latter with reporter Trish Tilby.

Since X-Factor pulled double duty, they operated under two names. As X-Factor Investigations, they were mutant-hunting "humans" who wore blue and white jumpsuits. As the X-Terminators, they were a mutant super team who wore colourful costumes with Xes stretched across their chest. The looks here represent their X-Terminators uniforms. Each one appeared in colour schemes based off of their graduation uniforms. For some reason, these five are always really hard for me to fully capture, but I tried my best to draw them as close to brimming with personality as possible.

It's amazing how many changes these five went through despite only being around for 70 issues.

That's really what helped the X-books to stand out in the '80s - lots of character development.

That may happen, if they were owned by Marvel.

Well, it's not exactly like Marvel gave us the O5 Avengers. Poor Hank is geriatric and Jan is off in that subatomic plane.

Well, there'd be like too many Avengers at that point, but they gave us the Guardians of the Galaxy.

I was implying that they should have stuck with the O5 Avengers for the first film or at least gone with Cap, IM, Wasp, Hank and Thor.

Cool! At least we got Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes for that.

I think a great many people cite that as the best Avengers adaptation too.

Yep! It's WAY better than the new Avengers cartoon.

So I've heard. I've yet to checkout Avengers: Assemble myself. I've also only seen the first season of EMH. It went off Netflix before I could check it out. XD

I love original X-Factor, but I always wonder what would have happened if Dazzler had joined.

It would have been interesting, considering she had previously hooked up with both Angel and Beast. Oh, the drama! XD

Makes me wonder if the original 5 were judges on that stupid talent show, would it still based around singing?

Hey, I'd kill to sit next to Cheryl week after week. Maybe then I could convince her to do a GA reunion. Of course, having Simon's multimillion dollar bank account would be nice too.

Awesome; though I never read the original X-Factor run I like the costume designs and concept of reuniting the original X-men. I really feel I need to re-read some of those old stories.

You're not missing much. While I enjoy soapy drama just as much as the next person, I wasn't a fan of Louise Simonson's characterizations or narrative choices.

Chris Claremont's Uncanny X-Men is a different story. If you haven't read his run (which spans 1975-1991), I'd highly recommend doing so.

Man those are some classic costumes. The colours feel so darn retro too. Did Beast come back to X-Factor before or after being an Avenger? Because I thought that Hank was blue and furry by the time he joined Earth's mightiest heroes.

Femmes-Fatales In reply to DanFalcon [2016-04-04 18:08:38 +0000 UTC]

After. Hank was reverted back to looking normal at the onset of X-Factor, but went back to looking furry around the Fall of the Mutants storyline.

Ah okay. I was wondering about that, especially since the timeline in X-Men is played with all the time. Man I should read Fall of the Mutants again. I remember liking it a lot.

I found it weak TBH. The story that ran in UXM was decent. The X-Factor stuff was mostly just okay. I wasn't a big fan of the choices Simonson made.

DanFalcon In reply to Femmes-Fatales [2016-04-04 23:01:26 +0000 UTC]

It always seemed like X-Factor was playing second fiddle to UXM at the time, like they wanted more focus to go into their more prominent book.

Femmes-Fatales In reply to DanFalcon [2016-04-05 14:43:27 +0000 UTC]

I wouldn't necessarily say that. A lot of developments occurred in X-Factor, such as the introductions of Apocalypse and Frenzy, Angel's transformation into Archangel, and baby Nathan being sent into the future. For me, it was that the quality of the book and its tendency to go into melodrama were questionable. I also wasn't a fan of the art. UXM had Silvestri and Lee, so it looked far more attractive that XF.

DanFalcon In reply to Femmes-Fatales [2016-04-05 16:51:17 +0000 UTC]

Apocalypse was always one of my favourite villains that the X-Men had, and Angel's transformation after the Mutant Massacre is one of the most noteworthy and memorable moments in X-Men history. As a whole the book did have some wavering quality. It really was UXM that looked better.

Femmes-Fatales In reply to DanFalcon [2016-04-05 19:32:02 +0000 UTC]

I remember being very underwhelmed with Apocalypse in X-Factor. It's been a while since I've read the series though. I read it concurrently with UXM when I dedicated myself to reading the series from Mutant Massacre until Mutant Genesis.

Any stories you can think of in particular? I've read very few with him in them set in the canon 616 universe.

DanFalcon In reply to Femmes-Fatales [2016-04-06 03:30:56 +0000 UTC]

Well, I was first introduced to him in X-Cutioner's Song. I also read of him in Age of Apocalypse (naturally), Apocalypse War, The Twelve (probably my favourite set up; essentially Apocalypse merges with the twelve most powerful mutants in order to become omnipotent), and Messiah War. Although the latter has him in very sparce amounts they are some of his finest moments ever.

I haven't read any material from the AoA universe. It's pretty expansive and involves a lot of books. I've heard good things though.

I've also really liked the concept of the Twelve. I have a few issues of it. However, most of what I've heard has been negative. Even still, that storyline was actually responsible for a shift in Cyclops' character. People often forget or don't know that.

DanFalcon In reply to Femmes-Fatales [2016-04-06 20:52:57 +0000 UTC]

Well I certainly remembered that it caused his character shift. And I will agree with you, AoA is really damn expansive isn't it. Hell, I barely knew where to begin when I read it.

There are a few oversized collections for it - I believe consisting of three or four volumes. There's also the lead-up too it (Legion Quest).
