Description This is the final character profile (for now?) for my Wonder Woman: The Animated Series concept.

Like a good chunk of the villains I've included in this series, Angle Man has no backstory canonically save for a few minute details. I had to flesh him out and really come up with something that worked for what we know of him. Truth be told, it's been exhausting and I'm probably burned out by now so this probably isn't the best biography of all the Wonder Woman villains I've done.

When it came time to design him, I decided to have him and the Mask match. They both wear black bodysuits, with their own separate unique elements. The thing I wanted to do was to establish both as wearing colours that correspond to Doctor Cyber (their boss). The Mask got purple, while Angle Man got the gold and green (which were already colours he wore in the comics anyway). The idea behind this was to visually show that Angle Man and the Mask are in opposition to one another, but also share characteristics with Doctor Cyber. There's somewhat of a contradiction too as Angle Man was the pacifist thief who is now desperate to see Wonder Woman burn, while the Mask is an assassin who is reluctant to harm Wonder Woman.

As always, I love hearing from you all so please leave a comment below letting me know your thoughts. Also, please feel free to suggest voice actors that you feel would suit this character.

Enjoy!

Very nice I see you took a color cue or two from his appearance in Justice League Unlimited.

Thanks! I actually didn't really use that as a reference point. The black is meant to match the Mask's catsuit (since they're Doctor Cyber's deputies in this concept).

Another one that I wasn't sure you would be doing, but I'm glad you did!

To be honest, I think my favorite part about this version of Angle Man is how you've managed to explain his powers perfectly, something that DC has been UNABLE to do and in such a way I can never fully grasp the powers behind him. Now that you've explained that it is teleportation and gravity control, I finally understand. And I think he would be a great adversary for WW!

I like how he starts out as a pacifist thief and conman, but turns more savage due to the many, many, MANY humiliating defeats by WW. I'm imagining a scene in the series where we are just going through flashback after flashback of him being defeated by the Amazon Princess. His rise to villainy is more one of humiliation than tragedy and scorn. It separates him from the other villains of WW.

I really like his design. I could see him keeping it after the fall of Revenant. I also like how one of his abilities is basically a superior intuition or view of the world, something that can not be fully acquired by other people.

Also, is the Society the Secret Society?

Now, on to voice actor choice, which would have to be Franco Nero.

Many defeats? Um... You may want to re-read the bio I've written for him. It's just one. Unlike Batman, Wonder Woman deals with her villains and they stay put. If it weren't for Cyber, he'd still be in prison.

Yes, he would keep it. I designed it in a way that I felt would stand on its own beyond this one season.

What do you think? The Society has been mentioned in a few bios. Given who is associated, I think the answer is pretty clear.

Sad to see this series reach it's end (temporarily?), but if this is the last profile it looks great.

I'll admit, I always found Angle Man silly. He seemed just way too Silver Age for the longest time, but I think you did a great job with him. The costume is great, and having him match The Mask certainly helps with them being partners within Revenant. Besides, it keeps the Bond-esque theme going well.

I gotta admit, my favourite part of the backstory has to be the hilarious contradiction between Angel Man and the Mask. As someone who is used to writing dialogue I would love to write some of the more humourous exchanges that could come from that setup alone. Other than that, giving him an actual fleshed out backstory is perfect.

Voice actor is another hard choice but I think that Jonny Cruz would be absolutely perfect.

I'm probably one of the few people who actually thinks Angle Man is cool. His powers are pretty unique and he's one of Diana's few non-mythological foes who is male.

If there's any humour in how Angle Man and the Mask interact, it would be from the antagonistic approach they'd have. It'd be very... Golden Girls-ish if anything. Shade!

Of course, the "set-up" as you put it isn't really meant to be funny. At least as far as the Mask is concerned. The idea of killing Wonder Woman goes against everything she's done in the past. Similarly, how comfortable would she be with how Angle Man is okay with it?

I'm more familiar with Angle Man from the Catwoman series where he and Film Freak played larger roles.

Golden Girls style shade would be amazing.

I honestly don't see her being comfortable with that at all. I mean, she\s being blackmailed into the job, Angle Man is here out on his own desires and interest. Naturally, she'd be less than thrilled to work with someone like that.

That run was awful. From OYL onward, Catwoman's title was garbage. Even long-time fans wanted it cancelled.

I entirely share that opinion of it. It's an absolutely abysmal run.

I always think it's a mistake to domesticate Catwoman. I don't gravitate towards her because I want her to be a mom or someone's wife. I gravitate towards her because she's a fun, INDEPENDENT character.

Catwoman fares best when she is free to be her own person and have her own adventures. Having her be a mum is fine, but she shouldn't just dump the mantle. Catwoman is awesome, incredibly fun! Keep her Catwoman!

Femmes-Fatales In reply to DanFalcon [2017-06-10 17:29:25 +0000 UTC]

I think it compromises her character in a way. Marriage and children come across as very gimmicky in comics as there is little to no permanence with either. Do I think Catwoman has nurturing traits? Yes. Obviously she cared deeply for Holly and she's especially good with cats. Do I think she's a character who would actually settle down? Hell to the no. Given her personality, I think she's more likely to be somewhat of an absentee mother or someone who would cheat on her spouse because she got bored of the monotony. Catwoman is a character who should be used to explore alternative relationships. I could totally see her having an open relationship.

DanFalcon In reply to Femmes-Fatales [2017-06-13 22:31:10 +0000 UTC]

Selina being in an open relationship would make so much more sense for her character. She has to have the openness and easy access to be the free spirit she normally is. Like when she says in Injustice 2, the monotony of married life just bored her. She preferred the Chase, not the capture.

Makes you wonder why Bruce proposed to her in the most recent issue (Well not wonder, but you get my point).

Right? We need her in her own book again with a queer writer. I just don't find her terribly interesting when she's relegated to Batman love interest mode. It's so dull and patriarchal.

Hell I'd write that book. Catwoman, Martian Manhunter, man I might as well make a list.

I really like this redesign of Angle Man, a great take on his super suit. Though I'm disappointed that it is the last character profile. I'm curious to see how you would do Dr, Psycho.

Thanks.

If you're disappointed that it's ending, you can always go back and revisit all the ones I've done thus far. I'd certainly love to hear your thoughts on them since I didn't during the posting process.

Doctor Psycho would probably be one of Cyber's henchmen if I felt more comfortable in being able to tackle such an offensive and triggering character. As is, I didn't feel I had the skill or insight to do so.

I thoroughly enjoyed your series, especially your modern spin on villainesses that haven't had modern updates, like the Mask, Zara, Queen Clea, and Hyponta. I do wish you wish you made Fury a villain instead of an anti-heroine because personally, I like the idea of her being an Amazonian extremist like in the Justice League cartoon. However, I am aware of Fury's heroic portrayals in the comics and understand your reasoning to your choice. I simply would have chosen a different route for the character.

As for Doctor Psycho, I feel like you're selling yourself short on your abilities by claiming you cannot tackle his character. In your bios of characters in this series, you talk about how female characters facing and overcoming misogyny; Doctor Psycho is the embodiment of misogyny. I feel like not introducing him, you're missing an opportunity to show equality defeating misogyny. What is Doctor Psycho motivation? He is a little person with a Napolean Complex because he feels wronged by the world because of his height; he hates women for not seeing past his lack of stature. Can he be offensive and controversial, yes but you can't please everyone. Batman the Animated Series show Harley Quinn in an abusive relationship with the Joker on a show meant for children. I understand why you may not want to do Doctor Psycho, but claiming a lack of skill or insight to do so is a load of crock. Take your favorite note of your favorite portrayals of this character and make it your own.

Modern update as in design? Or just appearing in modern comics? The Mask appeared circa 2006-2007 during Allan Heinberg's brief run and was given a brand-spanking new design from Terry Dodson. If we're just talking about comic book appearances, then Clea certainly appeared during Phil Jimenez's incredible run. She had a bit of a revamped backstory. Same costume though. Dodson did update it a bit for Clea's cameo during the Heinberg arc.

I honestly realized that it was important not to bastardize Fury's character just for the sake of appeasing fans of Justice League due to the fact that the character served as a passing reference for Aresia. The thing is, if you want aggressive Amazons who are more separatist in nature, then there are plenty to choose from in the comics. There have been Amazon civil wars due to that very subject! So, why fundamentally change one character when you can use ones that already exist for that purpose? Plus, Diana has so few costumed members to her family, so it'd be a bummer to cannibalize one of them to make into a villain. Batman basically has an entire army of costumed allies, why can't Diana have at least more than 3 or 4?

Here's the problem: Doctor Psycho is an offensive trope ("The Depraved Dwarf"). In fact, he's so typical that he's the featured image for it (tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php… ). There are so few depictions of people with dwarfism in fiction as is, so it is extremely hurtful and painful to depict them in that manner. Everything about Doctor Psycho's motivations and characterization shows dwarfism as something negative, something worth being so insecure about that it effectively leads you to (mental) rape. Napoleon Complex? I think not. He's not some guy who just happens to be a bit shorter than the average man. He's someone living with dwarfism and it is the responsibility of creators to not contribute to furthering stereotypical portrayals of that. Now, the case can be made of "Well, just make him taller." That's a catch-22 because that could be viewed as some kind of ableism, if I'm not mistaken. My feeling is that since I am not an individual with dwarfism, it is not my place to determine what is and isn't a correct course of action for such a character. It would be my preference to actually be able to consult individuals who are and have them shape the discussion because that is the respectful, human thing to do. The other part of it is the fact that his very presence can be triggering to people who have survived sexual abuse. There's really no denying that he's a rapist due to how his personality and powers are used in the comics. He assaults women without their consent. In a weird way, I almost feel it absolves or erases his actions to just be like "Well, we can make him less rapey." Why do we need Doctor Psycho? Hypnota can be used in a similar manner that isn't as invasive. Heracles can also be utilized as a misogynist, so could Angle Man if I so chose to. There really aren't any favourite notes or portrayals of Doctor Psycho that I have because I don't like his character and I don't feel comfortable even with the idea of a character like him being liked by others given what he represents. So, as I said, I don't have the skill or insight to do so because I'm a) not an individual with dwarfism or b) a woman who has survived sexual assault.
