About around B5 watercolour painting
Inspiration "Until Eternity" by Blackbriar

Oh yeah! In the process of trying to improve my watercolour painting skills I decided to paint some realistic birds

You heard it right - I'll try my best to paint realistically with watercolour

I absolutely adore the birds that I can usually see in my home country forests and cities so I decided to practice there

...they are mostly grey... and I don't have a grey watercolour pan... any grey colour at all what have I done!

Wish me luck!

i've tried so hard at both water color and gouache...taken lessons and classes, watched youtube videos...mostly i was able to make blueish/brownish swirls on paper...if you think you still have a lot to learn then i can't wait to see what you learn!!

watercolour is such a difficult and demanding technique it's so easy to mess up the effect you're looking for - it's sometimes so discouraging

please don't give up I'm sure your blue/brown swirls are charming at least you had fun, I hope?

I admire your devotion for taking watercolour classes

i am having fun...well, fun-ish. i have more fun when i produce something that looks close to what i was painting! oh well, i'll get there! and yes! those swirls were charming...if you like mud. i kinda do, so it worked out in the end!

thanks for your encouragement!

I'm sorry to hear that that sounds really discouraging please don't give up just yet

I've been thinking why colours might look like mud and I have a few ideas (no professional ideas! for those you need to find a professional ):

- the paints you use or mix have to many pigments - in watercolour the more pigments the less vivid the colour; most watercolours are signed from which pigments they are made of (symbols like PG36 or PBr7) and some colours are always a mixture of at least two pigments (like most purples and greens),

- you're layering the next colour before the previous one is fully dried or using too much water which activates the colour beneath - in this situation the colour beneath moves around and is hard to manage when it mixes with your new layer without control,

- the paintbrush is too hard - sometimes synthetic paintbrushes scratch the paper and activate previous/current layers; it's easier to add new layers with natural brushes because they're much softer and don't lift the previous layers as much

- you're layering too much (my personal biggest weakness) - while trying to make a colour more vivid I tend to put another layer of the same colour to make it more pop, again and again until the effect is just... bad

Would you like a watercolour exercise? Try covering a whole page (doesn't have to be big) in one pass adding colour after colour straight from the pans

...and so sorry for such a long comment hope I didn't bore you too much
