Description This was actually created at the behest of my anthropology professor. We were supposed to write a paper on symbolism and I discussed how anthropomorphic artwork is a symbol for the integration of animal self and human self.

May seem obvious, but there's more to it than that. The paper gets into some theoretical stuff, so I'll explain it from my personal perspective.

When I draw myself like this, I don't see it as drawing a representation of my "true" self. I am a consciousness, and my animal self is a different segment of consciousness. I don't experience life as an anthropomorphic canine, but as a human, and a canine, and sometimes varying degrees of both. I can't really visualize this creature as the sum of what I am.

Symbols can use visual depictions of something physical to express something internal. So the physical layout of anthro people, the physical blending of muscle, sinew, fur and face, is synonymous with the blending of intuition, instinct, reason, and mind. It's not me or my parts, but the interrelation of those parts. It symbolizes a harmonious whole, which is not necessarily how everyone experiences themselves. So I guess what I'm trying to say is this: there is the Self, and then there are symbols that talk about the self. This is the latter.

We share the same thoughts on this subject. Your talent however, is putting it into art. Very well done.

I'd like to read that paper. It sounds really interesting, and I love reading about anthropomorphic stuff; its strange and yet fascinating how people depict life so differently than it really is, and yet the depictions often time make more sense and are more interesting than life.

Not only is this a beautiful self portrait, but the description was... deep, and I found a lot I could relate to personally in there. The sepia tones here are wonderful, very "portrait-like". I also like the facial expression... it's one of a sort of shy curiosity.. Gorgeous pencil work.

I love this, every detail, the gentle disposition, its... REAL to me, I can feel my heart being touched. Maybe its because I visualize myself as a wolf. Of course this symbolization of my self is a bit overblown for me. Heheh, let's just say I experienced God's wonderful sense of humor say... 2 years ago.

I visualize myself as a fox, sly , always spying on others when needed, and devious. Yet always into mischief and a trickster. Nice picture, the anatomy and the explanation of the portrait explains a lot. It made me think as well, yet I always picture myself as a Red Fox.

Your artwork is near perfert, I say near because no art work can be the absolute perfect in my opinion. Only through one's own eyes can something be truely flawless; but your explaination of your art is superb. Its almost poetic.

Very theoretical and insightful. This piece really seems to capture the spiritual and physical bond between man and beast, soft shading and sketching; not ur typical anthro.

...but, I do have one question..

How much shaving cream do you go through in a week?
