The time period is pretty close, but I thought if Altair had orders to assassinate so many high ranking historical figures, why not a king? The idea of a confrontation between such a noble king (and assassin), really struck me.

Who knows? I never got that far in the creative process. Certainly there would have been enormous tension between the two great religious powers of the day, however.
