Description
During the defense of the Russian Osowiec Fortress August 6, 1915 German troops used against the defenders of the fortress of poisonous gases, consisting of chlorine and bromine compounds. Defenders had no gas masks.
Assuming that the garrison was dead, German forces launched an offensive. In the attack came 14 battalions of Landwehr - no less than seven thousand infantry. When the German infantry came up to the advanced fortifications of the fortress, the remaining defenders of the first line went to the counter - just over 60 people. Counterattacking had terrible form - with chemical burns mutilated faces, wrapped in rags, shaking with terrible cough, literally spitting out bloody pieces of the lungs on the coats. The unexpected attack and the type of attacking German units plunged in terror and turned into a stampede. Several dozens of half-dead Russian soldiers put to flight of the 18th Regiment of Landwehr. Attack of a handful of Russian infantry supported the artillery fortress. Later, the events of the German and European journalists dubbed this as a counter-attack "attack of the dead."
