Initially it was suppose to be an earthworm.

that would be interesting. wonder how one would make an earthworm look cute. lol.

The earthworm took up more space and covered the little orphan's feet so you couldn't tell if it were sitting. The snails made more sense as an ironic joke since they're on the run and snails are slow.
There was also a line I omitted 'and will eat you as you sleep'.
