Lang is the Grandfather of Vawkuu. Though Vawkuu in essentially a paradise likened to the stories of Eden, it was once a natural forest. Lang is the only living member of Vawkuu who remembers the days when predator and prey and caution between animals were realities in the forest. I’ve often equated him to being a wizard of sorts, a being held in respect, a bit of fear as well, but always carrying his powers and secrets with wit and humor. He is also the one most fluent what Vawkuu calls Spirit Tongue, the language of the Ghosts who guard the forest.

Lang is not infallible, obviously. When trouble strikes Vawkuu with Zared’s invasion, he in most ways remains just as lost and frightened as everyone else—only just able to keep peace and safety from the restlessness that is stirring. And when he’s serious, his bark and bite alike are never forgotten.
