Description "I had a mission," Gmork said reluctantly.
"You too?"
Atreyu looked at the werewolf with interest, almost with sympathy.
"Were you successful?"
"No. If I had been, I wouldn't be lying here chained. Everything went pretty well until I came to this city. The Dark Princess, who ruled here, received me with every honor. She invited me to her palace, fed me royally, and did everything to make me think she was on my side. And naturally the inhabitants of this Land of Ghosts rather appealed to me, they made me feel at home, so to speak. The Dark Princess was very beautiful in her way -- to my taste at least. She stroked me and ran her fingers through my coat. No one had ever caressed me like that. In short, I lost my head and let my tongue get out of hand. She pretended to admire me; I lapped it up, and in the end I told her about my mission. She must have cast a spell on me, because I am ordinarily a light sleeper. When I woke up, I had this chain on me. And the dark princess was standing there. "Gmork," she said. "You forgot that I too am one of the creatures of Fantastica. And that to fight against Fantastica is to fight against me. That makes you my enemy, and I've out-smarted you. This chain can never be undone by anyone but me. But I am going into the Nothing with all my menservants and maidservants, and I shall never come back."
Then she turned on her heel and left me...."

Ok so... Gmork and Maya, the Dark Princess, from Michael Ende's novel "The Neverending Story". Gmork has been one of my childhood nightmares, I was terrified everytime he appeared on the screen, and still now I can't watch the movie because of that.
Anyway, when I read the book, I completely adored the story of this character. I mean, the evil guy who falls in love for an evil princess... who is not that evil, since she wants to preserve her world from the evil. It's such a sad story!
So I wanted to draw Maya and Gmork... Since Fantasia (or Fantastica) is not an human world, I imagined the princess with human features but I enjoyed playing with colors for her.

Whenever I think of this chapter of the book, I always revisit this illustration. It pictures perfectly how content Gmork was when he thought he found a place and someone to include him into her life only to ironically find himself to have been manipulated and deceived. Gmork is one of those villains that you can’t help but feel empathy for. Currently I’m working on a Wendigo story and Gmork was my inspiration for it. Big Fans of the Neverending Story can pick up on the little nods and Easter eggs in relation with the Spook City chapter of the Neverending Story.

well, you can at least laugh at the fact that the sphinxes and southern oracles have breasts....
i just watched that movie for the first time since i was too young to understand what was going on (or notice anything of *that* nature), and when it got to the sphinx scene, this was my reaction:
"HHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA"

OMG I love this picture. I read the book and although Gmork was evil; he did not choose to be and knew no other life. I actually cried a bit during his retelling of how and who chained him.

Me too: I was always scared of him in the movie when I was a little kid, but reading that part made me think he wasn't that bad after all... It's a pity they didn't show that scene in the movie

I think they are suppose to do a new movie of the story. But if they do I hope they stay with the books plot and not some new producer's vision XP

"The new film--which original producer Dieter Geissler--will examine the more nuanced details of the book that were glossed over in the first film, that was directed by Wolfgang Petersen." found here -> [link]

Maybe we will see Gmork and Maya as well! *.*

I would LOVE to see Gmork and Maya! Even though I was mad the B(*c% double crossed him! Your depiction of Gmork looking so contented with her, relaxing on the bed makes me pity him more!!

Ahw, thanks ^^ I've always loved wolves/werewolves, the idea of a bad werewolf in love with a princess is... Dunno, sweet in my opinion ^^

LOL me too! I actually wrote a spoof of the three little pigs... where the loud partying pigs drives their new next door neighbor crazy and she goes all wile coyote on them to get them to leave. Her plan works and the so called big bad wolf winds up staying with her. XD

Maya? Probably a love lie, maybe an infaithful love, since she cheated on Gmork (who was in love with her, even if in his own way...)
