Description Like clockwork, the transmission tower sends its signal to its creators, although wether or not they are received (or its creators still exist) remains to be seen..

this originally was to be a completely different painting
[link] that was to be used as reference for a traditional media piece i was to do, but it went off in a whoile different direction. The beacon structure underwent 3 overhauls and took some godawful amount of time to paint because after BSing the perspective and hoping noone would notice, a friend noticed it, and i had to repaint the whole thing.

then the paintercrashes.. and the OS crash, bleh.

anywhoo, about 3 weeks and probably around 100+hours or so, heres the finished piece.

thanks , , and for the crits and support

WIP here
[link]

edit: sorry for the messages coming into watchers boxes.. been trying to get the damn mid sized thumb to show..

Edit 6-14: again .. trying to get the dang print submitted.. the blue on the left sucked..

while i was at it, i also tried adding transmission rings [link] .. but it broke the flow of the piece and sucked. so much for 10 hours making em :\

I own the print for this piece and let me tell you, if you think it looks good on the screen buy the print. The bigger the print, the better this piece looks. Definitely one of my favorites.

i really like this one lady! i LOVE the top of the tower and the organic shape of the tip(MMM?!...) one thing kinda strikes me as odd.....

The light "around" the tip of the tower...is it coming from behind, off form the disance? or is it coming from the beam out of the tip?...it seems like the former?!

Absolutely superb. I don't often look at art that doesn't deal with human/semi-human subjects and I really should branch out more on the evidence of this piece. I'm extremely impressed with your stylistic sensibilities, you've created something that has echoes of a traditional transmission device yet looks extremely alien as well. There is a great sense of scale to this too, that thing looks absolutely enormous. I'm liking the skewed angle you've done this at too it adds a good deal of dynamism to an already very dynamic piece. Excellent stuff.

oh for fecks sake.. print was rejected (they claim file was corrupted). Upon attempt to submit the damn print (AGAIN), you'll prolly wind up with yet another message in your box. sorry :\

I had made a batch of bugfixes after posting it, including an orientation change, (though i had put it in storage while making changes, as i was informed that making changes while in storage doesn't make messages appear in peoples boxes).. maybe when i also had to update the print it still wound up in your box...

i had made an update to my print yesterday (there was waaay too much blue on the left when i thought it would be cool to make small print at home), but i didn't know that the thing would wind up in your message boxes again because i fixed the print ( i put the piece in storage while updating the print).

I assure you that if the option was available to make dev/print edits *not* appear in message centers (journals editing does have that option though), i sure would use it. I feel strong discomfort with people getting the same piece in their box numerous times, but if i do find a glaring problem with a piece (especially a print), it has to be fixed :\

Wow, that is beatiful. I'm really impressed, it looks like you put of lot of work into and learned a lot creating this drawing. I can't think of much to critique... I'd maybe add more detail to the mountains in the background, and add their reflections in the water.

This is too delicious. I honestly can't think of any crits. Like someone else said, though, the highlights could stand to be a bit brighter. I do like the change in angle though. Makes the image more dynamic and exciting.

Eh..I suck at commenting tonight. =\

May I ask in what way(s) do you feel it make more sense in comparison to the previous orientation?

I've been riding mainly on emotional effect (and because i think i've gotten used to it being "flipped" on my desktop for the past week lol)

your opinion would be most appreciated

JasonIsAGhost In reply to fevereon [2005-05-14 01:26:46 +0000 UTC]

previous orientation? when i first viewed it, the divice was on the bottom left and was "transmitting" up to the right. that makes more sense to me, especially with your little story about sending something to some unknown builder, possibly on some other planned.

fevereon In reply to JasonIsAGhost [2005-05-14 02:42:30 +0000 UTC]

i was figuring that since there's no "up" in space, that it wouldn't really matter what direction the device was pointing, but since some other friends mentioned preference of the original orientation as well, I rotated it back

sorry to have bugged you >.<

JasonIsAGhost In reply to fevereon [2005-05-14 19:24:20 +0000 UTC]

no, thats ok.
i didn't know it was supposed to be in space, it looked like there are red clouds in the background.

but i am glad you are putting it back.

Oh wow, you finished it! It's beautiful, fev. I'm not sure if I like seeing it turned horizontally though. I think I preferred it vertical (90 degrees clockwise, or counter-clockwise, either way). Maybe because that's how I'd seen it for so long. I got used to it that way.

Other than that, though, the structure is wicked cool, and the background is amazing! I love the colors and the textures and the overall feel of the pic. You have a gift for eliciting emotional responses to cold, inanimate things. Ha ha. Gorgeous.

fevereon In reply to hakubaikou [2005-05-10 20:24:30 +0000 UTC]

Yeh i was still having weight issues with the vertical presentation.. and while attempting to correct it took a little bit to get used to the horizontal too, but i felt the energy i was looking for with horizontal presentation. The piece was rotated a LOT while working on it, and it never really had a true "up" until finishing

to be honest, i've actually been falling into affections with the orientation if it were rotated 180% from ite present position.. woul dhave the weight and balance, a more foreboding effect.. i may go and rotate it soon to be honest.

Very nice work. As a crit, your radar structure, could do with stronger highlighting, especially closest to the actual lightsourcing(i see an attempt to do this on the right side of the circular tubing). But as a whole, it does work as a dark silhouette. Excellent composition aswell, very cinematic piece.

Great work

Hi thrax ^^

thanks for the crit on this piece, i wasn't sure wether or not to go and do highlighting as i progressed with the piece (was liking the silhouette effect), but had done the bit on the right as a test.. looks like I forgot to remove it (thought i had ) thanks for pointing that out. I'll go back and work it more if i get a second wind for the piece.

thanks again!

Ohh man Fev, that turned out awesome! Aside from the beautiful rendering of the beacon, I'm really loving that background. The texture and atmosphere of it are simply spectacular. The whole scene looks very believable, and like I said before, be ready to laugh at those kids who ask what 3D prog you used. Wonderful lighting skill here, great job!

Oh oh, but, one thing if I may? That text, at the bottom...shrink it, and move it down some (maybe up the kerning a bit too). It's sorta getting in the way of that marvelous piece of work when your eyes move to the bottom. Other than that, nothing to say here!

Keep up the good work!

So much to like here. I really dig the off-kilter composition and how you go from a light BG to a dark foreground, as well as the design of the transmission tower. It has a kind of techno-organic look that is seriously cool. It was well worth the work/pain/agony. I like it well done!
