Oh my... ! That's dyatoris event and I am the judge for dressage I possibly wanted to enter with Pilot in one of the Show Jumping disciplines, otherwise I would have chosen one of these.
Never, really? That's weird... Even if you haven't won first place I'd expected you on second or third place for sure Don't know the circumstances, but that doesn't sound very fair to me.

Yupp never, recently I placed 3 with an image I was proud of but that's it. The thing with that competition was that people were allowed to vote for which image they liked the best and i got the most votes so I thought I had won only to find out that aparently the public vote only was a small part of it

Whooo, that's tricky. Disappointed participants could say I play favorites because I like you - hope there won't be such comments. But nothing to worry about - you have to do a good job first (which I don't doubt at all )
I got the feeling that some people misunderstand 'fair' judging. The problem is, that if 'good' artist with very realistic pictures win, people keep complaining because they think it was judged on skill/best overall impression, not on effort. On the other hand there are artists like you who put a lot of effort into their pictures and get frustrated because it's not rewarded as it should be. The problem is, that you annoy people one way or the other...
People like you with a high standard can hardly improve a lot in their pictures, respectively they can/do, but often few people notice that besides themselves. I like the idea with the self-judging part more and more, if we develop and improve it a little bit more (and make people use it) that really could be a great step for fair judging! The artists feeling would be taken into consideration while judging - like you who says you have drawn like one of the best pictures ever in your own opinion.
