Did you just smudge the colours together from step one to three?

Sort of.. I smoothed them out with a brush on low opacity and "cleaned" it up a bit too, I also added a bit of detail

She doesn't smudge. She uses the same colors on a low opacity setting back over the top. She has a tutorial about it in her gallery.
