Description My shoes rub in blisters, but they're beautiful,
and I'm beautiful,
so what do I care?
I sent an old friend a text message wishing him
happy birthday today, but I doubt
I'll hear back.
He has my headphones, and I have
his copy of the White Album on vinyl,
so neither of us can listen to it.

The bum sitting across from me on the bus has
on Converse high tops new enough
that the white is still white. He listens
intently as the man next to him describes a fight
scene from one of the Street Fighter movies.
The longer I look the more I think
that maybe he's not a bum,
just tired.
I'm tired too.

More than anything I want
to see God
in the patterns
on the bus benches again.
I have the memory in me and I can still call forward the feeling,
but it's the knowledge of the truth in the details escaping me.
I'm tired of being unable to see the trees for the forest.

The little girl next to me points
at every lit-up tower and asks
if it's the Space Needle. She misses
the actual building because tonight
it stands as just a dark silhouette against
the nightening sky
and she
was facing the wrong way.
