Description
Through my open window I can see the breath
my neighbors exhale
during their wordless fucking, and I
feel like I'm in high school again.
In my favorite all-night diner, I
feel small-talk tickle the hair on my cheeks,
and even though I know I should be paying
attention to the diatribe
on someone's mother,
I'm too busy hearing his eyes as they ask me
to say again, "I do that too."
If I play along then maybe we'll agree
to the pretense of watching
a movie while we show the neighbors our own breath,
and afterwards he'll have lost
the remainder of his enigma status,
but at least he helped muss up my too-straight mind
like a stormfront wind blasting my hair
into my face and trying to
tear out my contact lenses.
